Well, I gave it a chance, but unfortunately I haven't been able to get comfortable with the headset mic setup. Maybe it's the material I'm doing, but I need to sing 'off the mic' at different times for different volumes/effects, and that's just impossible to do with the headset mic. So, I'm going back to my 'vintage' Shure mic setup with boom stand. It actually looks better anyway, and the sound is much crisper and very clear! So much for trying to re-invent the wheel, huh?

For absolute best mic dynamic, the standard boom set up is undoubtedly the best. The looks thing is arguable. I don't care for having a boom in front of me or being frozen in one position in front of the mic. So, for me, the headset is more comfortable.

Every once in a while, I will take my right hand off the keys to pull or push the mouthpiece closer or further from my face for desired dynamics. It is the only trade off or downside I see to the headset.

And it is one less stand I have to carry around. We all have our priorities, and that is one of mine.

Eddie,

You're right, and that was the intent when I first went with the headset. But, as vocal dynamics play a big part in my style of singing, I didn't like the trade-off of my left hand leaving the keyboard to keep adjusting the mic. When I see other singers on TV do that (like Michael Jackson on his anniversary special), it distracts me. But to your point, I can see how it would be much more comfortable with the headset. As for the boom mic situation, mine is the 50's style replica mic that Shure puts out. That's what I meant by looks. I also position it in such a way as not to block my mouth or this ugly 'puss' from my audience.

I too have struggled with the headset mic scenerio to no avail. The headset mic setup can work for certain types of songs (such as driven dance tunes) where the range of vocal dynamics/coloration isn't critical, but it's too limiting when traditional mic efx techniques of 'pulling away' vs 'getting close into the mic' are crucial to achieve more variety of vocal colorations. The headset just won't cut it for most of the songs I do. - Scott

I agree with all of you, I wish they would make a headset mic that would know when it get away from ur mouth and when to come back .

You can control your vocal dynamics much better with a regular mic, but for the type of music I do, I need my eyes on the arranger, cause I am constantly changing styles, fills, tempos, sounds and so on (Arabic music is very very very dynamic in that sense...www.6arab.com and check out some songs and see what I am talking about), so in short I tried the regular mic, but I could not see the buttons and push the right ones, so its a trade I guess and for me the headset mic is the only I can do best with as long as I am the one playing keyboards .

After the first headset try, I simpli can't live without. This is because I often need to look where my fingers are, and this is a problem with a classic mic. Moreover, I have three keyboards stacked, and it is not easy playing the lower one and singing.

I'm currently using a Sennheiser, but I'm waiting for an AKG to give it a try.

The standard mic is still present, connected to a KORG iH Vocal Harmonizer, which is midi - drived by a KORG X3. So, when I need more than one voice, I sing in both mics (the headset is at the right side of my mouth) and play the X3 (wich is at the top of the stack!)

So things works as long as I keep this setup.
