The demo for One Man Band version 10.0 is available for download at http://www.1manband.nl/omb.htm

One Man Band is a software arranger (real-time and sequenced) and style editor utilising Yamaha styles.

Some of the new features are:

VSTi and DXi hosting with support for ASIO drivers. This has been the most requested feature in the last 4 years. So now you can plug in your softsynths.

Load the next style without interrupting the currently playing style in live mode (switch-without-a-glitch). When the new style is loaded it will take over at the start of the next measure.

Reduced latency version of the Microsoft synthesizer. The default MIDI Out is now the JM synthesizer. It uses the same wavetables as the Microsoft synthesizer but hasn't got the quarter second delay before you hear a pressed key.

Style loudness correction to compensate for the loudness differences between styles from different origins. Available in menu settings/Style-loudness-correction.

Control all the different volumes with the sliders of a MIDI keyboard controller in live mode. Define the controllers you want to use for this in menu settings/keyboard-control-functions. In the same window you can define MIDI triggers for each function, by specifying MIDI port/channel/messagetype.

A new function is Block Tempo. If on it will ignore the tempo of a new loaded style and play the new style in the same tempo as the previous one.

Use wave sound effects in live mode. Wave files can be loaded in the SFX panel in PC keyboard 2 and MIDI keyboard window.

Improved user interface. Arranger, eventslist and pianoroll window will show more measures/events/notes when the window is enlarged. The window will scroll while playing in eventslist, pianoroll and arranger window. OMB will start in the window that was last used.

Hey Joe, I have a question. Is there feature that allows easy reorchestration of the instruments in the style that is playing? If not it would be a great feature for a future release.

Hi Doc,

You can do that in the mixer window.

You could also assign patch/bank changes for specific channels to keys in the SFX panel.

I just downloaded this to check it out and noticed that the names of the intruments don't fit into the boxes. Is that an OMB issue or do I need to change the pixels on my computer?

Hi Scott
I have just downloaded the trial version and all the names fitted in the boxes without problems.
I am using a 19” LCD with a 1280 x 1024 resolution and a 32bit colour depth.
Hope this helps

Bill

I must be doing something wrong. I have a pc with XP Media. I download as SAVE, Winzip puts it in an UNZIPPED folder. I copied SETUP to an empty folder. When I install,I see a bunch of folders(Bootstrap Basic),but no GUI comes up.

Hi Bernie
You don’t need to install WinZip as it is built in to the Windows XP OS, however as its loaded, double click the Zip file you downloaded and WinZip should open, you can then choose where you want to store the uncompressed files, (I suggest a new folder in My Documents) click Unzip and the uncompressed files will be transferred to the new folder, close WinZip and open the new folder, then look for the Icon called Setup.exe, double click the icon and follow the instructions to install OMB.
Hope this helps

Has anyone out there used OMB as an arranger to perform live?

For the past 2 days, I have been playing around with "One man band" and got it working with my PK-5 bass midi pedal and my laptop. I am using a MIDIMAN 2X2 as an interface between MIDI output on the PK-5 and the USB port on my laptop.

Is anyone else using a similar setup?

I notice a bit of latency and I wonder if shortening the USB cable from 10 feet to 3 feet would reduce the latency and also shorten the MIDI from 10 feet to 6 feet?

Since my laptop does not have a game port, is there a PCMCIA card out there with a MIDI input that I could connect my PK-5 to?

The latency you are noticing comes from the software that is playing the sounds in your laptop. Length of USB or MIDI cables has no effect.

The only way to shorten the latency of the sound is to use a better sound card or interface, with lower latency ASIO drivers, or to use an external MIDI module (perhaps a Sonic Cell from Roland?) instead of internal sounds.

shortening those cables as you suggest will make no difference at all to latency...with one man band there can be major latency issues because of the huge data flows with some arranger styles...the only solution is the thin out the controller messages within OMB itself..its the reason i pretty much ditched OMB as a live tool, and went back to hardware arrangers.hope that helps..
cheers

Are you using the jmsynth that came with OMB?
I use it with an edirol pcr m80 controller and find it gives me the lowest latency.
I don't use asio or soft synths, mainly because I'm too lazy to learn all about how to use them, and I find this setup adequate for my simple needs.

Softsynths (just like real ones) come in all flavors of price and capabilities. An inexpensive one can no more be expected to respond as well, or sound as good, as a cheap hardware synth. Add to that the possibly limited horsepower from a lesser laptop, that may be struggling to play back styles developed for modern 128 voice arrangers, and a generic driver for a cheap internal soundcard, and you have a recipe for high latency and poor timing.

Just like most things, you get what you pay for. Latencies can get as low as 1.5ms with some pro audio interfaces, and modern Core Duo based laptops can breeze through 128 voice styles. But expecting hardware responsiveness when using built in audio on perhaps older laptops is not reasonable, IMO.

Thanks for letting us know about the update Jos. I have added a feature link on the front page of Synth Zone to let everyone know about the new version.

Thanks for all the replies.
There is no noticeable latency if I use the Jm synth or the VSC DXI.

I,ve got it all working with the Roland PK-5 bass pedals and I am able to change chords with the pedals. Now I need to fugure out how to program one of the pedals to stop the song. Does anyone know how?

I figured out how to use C4 to do both the intro and outro.
