I have just today took delivery of a new PSR3000. I am very happy with it. The main thing I miss is AFTERTOUCH which all my previous boards have had. I had become so used to the aftertouch that I now find I have to adjust my ways of playing for the first time.

Question. I would be interested in comments regarding this from other players as the 2K 21K & 3K all have no aftertouch. Has it made any difference to the way you play.

I wish my 2100 had aftertouch.
I have had it on a number of keyboards in the past and miss it on the 21k.
With aftertouch I am able to be much more expressive and personal in my playing not to mention in control of whatever I assign to the aftertouch.
Good Topic!!

Graham,

I really don't miss it at all. Though I owned two boards with it for breif periods, and it was a great feature, since purchasing the PSR-740, 2000, and 3000 it's as if it were never there. The adjustment period to playing took just one day and I never loooked back.

When I first got my XD3 I also missed aftertouch so I edited some of the (mainly guitar) voices with delay vibrato as these were the voices that I noticed most as on most other voices there was natural sampled vibrato.

It's either that or diving for the wheel I'm afraid if you want maximum realism. If you use the pitch wheel for realism as well you will soon get used to "playing the wheels"

Yep, this sucks for me too. I got so used to the aftertouch on my CS6x synth. I thought the 3000 might be able to at least receive aftertouch data from my MIDI controller, but it doesn't - it just gets ignored.

Sorry for the DUMB question... Very new to keyboards here. Yam 2K owner.

What is aftertouch and how do you use it?

Thanks, Russ

In simple terms. There is Initial Touch. Example (Piano) the sound relates to how hard you initially hit the key as would a real piano. There is After Touch. Example (Sax) once the note is played by putting extra pressure on the key the voice sound can change as would happen if you overblown a sax.
Today all the better quality keyboards have Initial Touch. Higher priced ones also have After Touch.

Initial touch = Velocity.....
so there is a slight difference between :
How hard & How fast

By saying 'how hard....' people might think it is the initial pressure on the key. It is the SPEED the key comes down. The keys mostly have 2 contacts that get activated shortly after eachother. The 'closer' (in time) the activations occur, the faster the key was pressed, the louder the voice will sound.

Aftertouch depends on the extra pressure after (a) key(s) is/are pressed. AT only has one sensor for all octaves together.

As far as I know the coming G70 also has 'release velocity', that can be used to calculate the amount of noise of e.g. sax-valves? (how fast are they closed?)

Roel,
Roland uses the "release velocity" already, in synths like the XV 3080; a good example is an acoustic guitar patch, where the release velocity controls a partial that has only fret noise. The overall effect is very realistic.
Would you like that I post an MP3 using that patch?
