I'm looking to set up a small-time project studio at home. What is the "best" recording mic for less than $200? $300? I need a mic that will work well for both solos and duets (both singers using one mic at once). Would a specific response pattern, such as bipolar or figure 8, work best for a duet? How would a regular cardiod handle that? Do all condenser mics need phantom power, or just the ones that mention it specifically? Also, what are the best monitors (active) for $300 or less? Thanks!

For a mic, I recommend AKG C3000B. It is a condenser mic so it does require 48V of phantom power. It is for $300. Before you buy, you need to try.

Concerning the monitors, I am assuming you are asking for $300 for PAIR of active monitors. I strongly suggest you increase this limit to $500. Try to get Event PS6 for that price. Do not get PS5, they are two small. Seek other suggestions.

A cardiod pattern will handle two singers if they are VERY close to each other. For a better separation, with only ONE mic - you want a figure 8 pattern. That way, they can face each other, and still have some degree of separation.
Avoid the "super" and "hyper" cardiod patterns if you need W I D E coverage. They are intended to block OUT signal from the sides and rear.
