Actually it was announced earlier in the year and has been available to users in Beta format for months, so changes are well documented. (There are plenty of reviews out there on bot YouTube, Websites & Forums)
Naturally it also supports Apple Silicon (The first products of which will be available next week (And can be ordered now) which with Rosetta 2 should allow 3rd party programs to run on the new silicon without problems. (All the big manufactures are porting over their software to get the best out of Apple silicon with many already (Or shortly will be) available)

Yes: Always backup before upgrading, as while unlikely there is always a possibility that something could go amiss.
