Tony, you are correct about backward compatibility, however, some really smart folks, particularly Michael Bedesem, wrote a program called MIDI Player II, which allows you to quickly and easily convert most of the newer styles to older formats. Michael has also written several other great programs for Yamaha keyboards and midi file work, all of which are free.
