I would think most, if not all, of us at one time or another had to 'lead' a vocalist (sit-in or otherwise) by playing the melody line of a song ... One problem I see is that I seldom play a melody line EXACTLY as it is written ... often adding my own grace notes or 'trills', so playing the melody line can become a problem for me as well as the vocalist....
