I've been using a Zoom H4 recorder recently to record live, and as a scratch pad 'idea grabber'. Mp3 to 24/96, solid state (SD card), easy auto recording, and USB 2 to transfer to your computer.

I have found it to be a very reliable, no muss no fuss way to record without a lot of learning curve... Check it out.
