You should go to Guitar Center or similar places and try them out.

For really cheap electric drums with decent sounds try YAMAHA DD55 for $150-200. It has 7 pads. It also has built-in rhythms/songs(music and bass lines) for practicing styles. The only drawback, the base and the high-hat are cheap keyboard sustain pedals/footswitch. There is also Roland SPD-6 that is only $250.00 that will give you professional quality sound. I think it may have real bass pedal action (extra). But it only has 6 pads which is a drag and also no rythm functions.

Next level-up for about $500-700 will give you better sounds and real base pedal action (extra). Try Roland SPD-20 which has 8 pads.

Then the high ends will be those FULL size sets with individual pads. Yamaha, Roland and couple other brands can be found quite easily at the stores.
