The editor in Tyros is quite limited. Your experience is not unique. Most users migrate to a PC based sequencer for editing, but not always initial recording.

The problem with recording directly to any of the sequencers is that the Tyros does not send the voice setup data that you might have setup. What is worse, it is very hard to duplicate it by selecting voices etc in the sequencer. All this is because the PSRs automatically setup DSP,Eq and other parameters when a Preset Voice is selected in the instrument. When the same voices is selected in Cakewalk or one of my programs, all you get is the basic voice without the effects, etc.

If you are comfortable recording on the PSR, then the easiest choice is to record there and edit using a PC sequencer. Cakewalk is the most popular, but without use of a program such as Chord Assist it will remove the Yamaha Chord Events that you normally see after a Quick Record. XGWorks will preserve these and has the best support for XG files, but it is more difficult to use and few users are able to assist you with whatever problem arise.

I hope that this is of some assistance.
