it cost a little.I've been using Cubase SX for a couple of years now with lots of success. They say Cubase 4 (the newest version) is out of this world and is a complete package with plug-ins anv VSTis. It runs around $1000, but you can get an educational discount for around $400, or a slightly lighter version for $200 called Cubase Studio. (the main thing you loose with the lighter version is professional scoring).
Obviously you'll have to show educational proof, or just buy it 'for' your son.
