John - wow. It didn't seem to "used to be like this". I know insurance adds a big chunk. On my mandolin (different post), the parcel post rate w/$3600 (FL-CA) was $65 for 7-9 days (but it's late).

The same insurance w/Priority Mail (3-5 days) was $50 more. Now I'm wishing I had opted for the Priority ship... I could've tracked the package then.

I share your concerns....it's getting awfully expensive.
