There was a game show in the UK many years ago, I think it was called 'Name That Tune'. A contestant would say, "I'll name that tune in . . . " (insert number of notes they'd gamble on getting the title right), say three notes. The pianist would then play that number of notes and the contestant would take a shot at guessing the tune. If he or she was wrong, the turn would pass to the other contestant.

If that contestant didn't get it, the first one would take another gamble, say four notes, and so on. This went on back and forth until the first phrase of the melody was well recognisable. Even then, some of them never got it right.

I tried something similar at a party once with a lot of Brits present. I told them that I would play part a traditional song from the four home countries of the British Isles, England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, and they'd have to guess which tune belonged to which country. It was a lot of fun - they all enjoyed it very much.

Cheers, Donny. Man, that looks hokey now. I'd forgotten that one. That was a development of the one with just a pianist. Thinking back, that might have been just a segment in another variety show.

Hi,
Heidrun is brilliant, she does the Soundwonderland software.

Really enjoy her utube clips.

Bachus, thank you ...
I don't have the piano skills to try that during a performance - unless perhaps I worked on it a lot - but the idea of incorporating a "Name That Tune" segment into one of the AL/IL venues I play on a regular basis is intriguing ...
Thanks again ...
