I am glad and fortunate to have seen him in concert a couple of years ago.
Even though he wasn't able to play his guitar (Lucille) as well as he used to' because of his diabetes, his voice was still powerful and amazing...

Sad day for sure.

I liked his economical playing...his singular, clear vibrato allegedly came about because as a young guitar player,he couldn't master slide guitar, which was the style of choice in his native Mississippi Delta. Instead, he learned to simulate the slide tone by using his hands alone; by developing his vibrato, which he accomplished by shaking his finger perpendicular to the neck.

I remember him saying in an interview that when you’re a soloist you don’t play a note just because you can find one...you do it because it makes sense. Every note is important. If it can be done well with less, then do that.

He continued to push himself even though he was a legend nearing 90 with nothing left to prove.

RIP the King.

Ian

Met him 7 years ago or so. He headlined the Blues Festival at the Horse park here in Lexington, with the Neville Brothers and Johnny Lang.

My company provided the staging and miscellaneous equipment (including tube Fender amps, a "B" and a 147RV Leslie), and I was there for 8 hours or so. He and I had coffee, which I had in the supply truck.

He was tired. Unfortunately, I was working that night and didn't hear him.

A giant in the music field. I had read his autobiography several years before. Think I'll revisit that.

Chas, if you want to borrow that book, I'll ship it to you.

The term "legend" is overused but absolutely applied to B.B. R.I.P.
