A friend of mine has asked me this question. Please assist me if i missed anything out. On the cons i told him that he would be giving up aftertouch, upper 3,better screen, hard drive. On the pros i told him the s950 has more megavoices,s art voices, cool sweet, live than the tyros 2 as well as VH2, expansion slot for styles, sounds, audio styles, more indian sounds and drum kits. Did i miss anything??

The 950 is black and seems like it will have decent speakers.

I've been thinking about the same idea.

Besides aftertouch, how will the T2 keyboard feel, as compared to the s950?

Will the s950 have a better piano sound than the T2?

Will all of my settings from the T2 transfer to the s950?

I have owned Tyros 2, PSR S910 and Tyros 4 in the past.

The PSR S910 has every sound from the Tyros 2 plus ALL the new Synth sounds and Pads from the Tyros 3. It also has the middle eastern drum kits which were on the T3.

- It has better Mega guitar voicing.
- MP3 and Audio player
- MP3 recorder

The Tyros line has a FAR BETTER keybed with after touch AND can layer 3 voices in the right hand(Upper 1, 2 and 3).

The PSR S950 obviously includes all the same sounds as the S910 but in additional a few other upgrades such as:

- Better concert grand piano sound from the Tyros 3 (which is almost the exact same as the SA Concert Grand on the Tyros 4)

- new standard and rock drum kits from Tyros 4 which will freshen things up over the tyros 2 and S910.

- Additional SA voices taken randomly from T3 and maybe T4.

- Its black and much smaller and lighter than the Tyros line

...but the biggest drawback seems to be that it still doesn't have any SA 2 voices or any of the choir voices from the Tyros 4... plus... dont forget those rubber buttons!!

good luck,
Nick

Don't know how much you would have to spend to upgrade from Tyros 2 to PSR950 but personally I would never consider such a move. Probably for slightly more money you can get yourself the brand new KORG PA600 in addition to your Tyros 2 and have the best (...well nearly the best) of both worlds !!!!!!

regards,
John

P.S. I have the PSR-S900 in combination with the PA800 and am truly pleased with my set up. Sure, if I were a professional entertainer or had buckets full of money I would probably go for the PA3X and Tyros 4, or rather the PSR910 as it is less bulky. Nonetheless in view of your question and ( I presume) budget I think it worthwile considering what I remarked above.....

Thank you for the responses to me query.

Everybody's needs are different and the only true judge is to try it.

For me, I'm tired of always needing to add my Mackie 150 as a personal monitor when playing out on the T2. So the speakers of the S950 are of great interest to me. No choir voices. I would never use them. Some of the SA voices are nice but I am a woodwind player too so the artifical woodwind sounds are too, well, artificial. I really want a better piano sound. The T2 is pretty weak there. As for the keybed, as a pianist anything short of weighted keys is a big compromise. But I don't want to carry something with weighted keys. Get a PA600? One arranger is enough thank you very much. I'm looking to haul around less, not more. So even with the shortfalls, the S950 may be a good next step for me because I don't see paying over $5k for the next Tyros.

If you really need a solid key bed and need three layers and aftertouch, then I'd move up to a T3.

If you want the onboard speakers and the better harmonizer + Audio Drums + all the karaoke stuff + if you want brand new, then I would go with the PSR-S950.

Unless the keys are a deal breaker (I'm happy with them), the S950 is better than the T2.

Sampler? Let's not forget the Tyros's major feature over the PSR's...

Yamaha is NOT known for great arranger kb keybeds....if that is a Major concern for your playing style don't buy anything without playing it first!!...& certainly don't listen to anyone but your own fingers, you don't want to make an expensive mistake... stop I wish you good luck choosing.
