My daughter's twin daughters are getting to the age where they sit and jabber back in forth in a language only they understand and I want to record them. Anyone have any ideas about a portable recording device I could buy? I don't need it for anything els.

Zoom H1 or Zoom H2NXT. Both have incredible mic and record on up to 32 GB SD cards. They record at all MP3 rates and at 16bit or 24 bit .wav rates.
The H1 is really small and sells for $99.00 and the H2Nxt is larger but has 5 microphones including X/Y plus mid-side and 2 channel and 4 channel surround sound. It sells for $199.00. The H2 can also change key without changing speed and change speed without changing pitch. H1 uses 1 AA battery and the H2 uses 2 AA batteries.
Great recording devices.

That's really neat Hammer! For stuff like that and recording practice sessions, I use "Quick Voice" which is a free app on the iphone./ipad.

George is right...the little Zoom units are GREAT! We use one for single track voice-over recording, sometimes. I used an H-2 for the 10 minute guitar piece I recorded and posted in January.
In that case, I "lined in" from a mixer, but I also have excellent recordings of just a piano, bass and drum trio, done at a gig, with just the internal microphones.

One downside: the battery doors are extremely flimsy. Both the units e use have been taped together.

Knock yourself out while recording those great "memories".

Maybe even better is the Zoom Q3HD with not only incredible recording sound, but also has HD Video recording:

Deane,

I have the older Zoom H2, which I just plug into my PSR-3000's headphone jack. It does a fantastic job and is only the size of a pack of cigarettes.

Cheers,

Gary cool

We just got a little 8 track digital Tascam in and we're going to use it for a remote Video shoot on Monday. $299.00. I'll give you a report and a catalog number (LOL) after we edit the piece.

Looks fantastic on paper.
