I have several wav files that I use for backing tracks. Since I created them at different times, they have different volume levels. What is the best way to batch "normalize" these files?

Also, I've heard that normalizing is destructive. Not sure what that means, but it doesn't sound good. Is it better to utilize something called replay gain? Again, this is just for backing tracks. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Glenn

There is a free program call MP3 gain that works great and quick.

For wav files I use Soundforge, but only for single files (I don't think it can do batch normalization), choosing a factor of 90% (which from a practical point of view is almost like 100%, but without the risk that something along the audio chain can clip). With Soundforge you can also undo what you have done if you don't like the result.

Nero-Burn will do it if you're saving them to CDs.
