UD?
I think UncleDave had posted a while back about trying a 20gig hd though I may be mistaken as to the size, and said he had trouble getting it recognized...
He will probably jump in here and clarify.

Indeed, we had a chat on this matter but it got lost in the crash.

I don't think theres a size limit in terms of the USB specification, it's a question of whether the keyboard has its own driver that can cope with the organisation of the USB device. So there may well be an upper size limit caused by the PSR3k itself, but I don't know what that is (sorry).

I recall that there was some discussion of a limit on the number of files/folders that the 3k can cope with within a single folder - 255 items maximum perhaps.

A USB device that isn't recognised should have no other side effects and should not damage your keyboard. If you have a 40gig usb drive available to test, go ahead - after reading the rest of this post, that is!

The only gotcha from a damage viewpoint is that you can power USB devices directly from the cable, so the power for the peripheral device is provided by the host. The host may have a limit on the amount of power it can provide in this fashion. Hard discs usually take (relatively speaking) a lot of power and this would be my main worry from a hardware point of view. Regrattably the manual doesn't seem to give any figures.
