Warning: If curse words offend you, don't watch this.

Harlan Ellison is a very successful science fiction writer. Here's his take on not getting paid for your work in exchange for "Oh, but it's free publicity." Which musicians/songwriters hear often.

Ha! Ha! I agree with what he says. I had bosses who talked like Warner Bros. did.

For many years it was the same scenario in the nursing home circuit. And, in some areas of the world it still is. Many novice entertainers and home players sometimes go to nursing homes and offer them an hour or two of music at no charge. Most cannot play worth a damned and by and large they are not singers. (There are exceptions, but they are few, and far between.)

The vast majority of these individuals are well meaning and feel they are providing a service to the nursing home residents and cheering them up. Most ADs in my area no longer use volunteer entertainers. Remember the the old saying "You get what you pay for!" It really holds true in the entertainment biz.

I am one of those who play music for residents of Nursing Homes, Senior Centers, and wherever....as a volunteer.

I do not claim to be a "professional musician".... My claim is that I love music and love sharing it with others.

That my audience and I enjoy my music is my reward for my volunteer effort.

If what I do disturbs your sense of self.... get over it....

Be All YOU Can Be... Enjoy All YOU Do...

When the band we had in NY was first starting out (we were in High School), we got an offer to play a gig .. the guy said, "play the first one for nothing, and then after that you can name your price." ... being over-anxious and naive, we agreed ... so we played the first gig for nothing, and never heard from the guy again!!! ... lesson learned ... ...
