While playing through my 5 yr old Behringer Eurorack($99), I occasionally experience drop in volume, then a gradual return to normal. When I bypass the mixer, all is well.

Wheras, it could be several things, I wondered if any of you have experienced this. I am thinking that a better quality rackmount passive fx mixer might be in order, as I don't trust it anymore.

Bernie,
I've had similar problems with the Berhinger mixers. They can't be beat for the price, but their durability I question. If in 5 years this is the first problem you have had, then that is great. You have definitely gotten you money's worth out of that piece.

I would get a replacement board because you simply cannot afford to have equipment that can't be trusted.

If you don't mind replacing them a little more often, then Behringers seem to be one of the lowest priced boards for the features included. I don't think any of my Behringers lasted as long as yours have BTW and I had several. 1 year to 3 years was the life span I found.

Many people like the Mackie boards as a step up from Behringer, but I find them a little cold. I have heard that the preamps on their "onyx" series were quite good.

I use the Allen & Heath Mix Wizard 16:3, also comes in a 14:4 configuration. Great boards but a little pricey.

If money was no consideration I'd probably go with a "Midas", but I can't see spending quite that much more on one.

I think EV makes some good mid-range boards, and Soundcraft has a few in the lower ranges now. They would probably both be good choices

Bernie,

I would check all connections and cables. If you can get the red tube from a can of WD-40 into the pots I would also give them a squirt and then spin or slide them a few times.

A good thought. It has been sitting in my rack unused for two years, and then only channels 1-3 were used.

On the other hand, my trusty old Mackie 1202 was hauled off the shelf after six years and works like new. For reliability, I see why Donnie likes Mackies.

Since mixers have few working parts, I would think, in my case, inactivity may be the culprit. I am sure that a good cleaning of both units are past overdue.

Drats!
All I have is stick deoderant. It is going to be rough getting it to the pots. Wouldn't that gum them up ?

I had that problem....At first I thought it was the tape deck I was playing into. Sound would falloff a bit on one channel.

So I was allset to dump the deck until it did it through the digital mixer too.

Now I think its one of the output devices on the keyboard.

Or else it's whatever drives the headphones from the keyboard. That's what I'm listening to on either unit when recording.
