The one aspect of MIDI I'm totally clueless on is sys-ex messages... how to encode, decode, and utilize these controllers. Does anyone know of a resourse or web reference that would help? Thx

Do you mean "in general"? Or, do you have a specific manufacturer in mind?

If Yamaha, then maybe this site will help.

"In General" For example, a MIDI file contains the following, as seen in my sequencer, PowerTracks Pro Audio, Event List:

Sysex Data:F0 41 10 42 12 40 00 7F 00 41 F7

F0 41 10 42 12 40 01 10 02 02 02 02 02 02 02 02 02 02 02 02 00 00 00 00 17 F7

It's a mystery ot me what that means or what it does, but obviously it does something important.

I'm not sure, but I think that knowing how to encode the correct sysex message in a MIDI file would allow you to control the harmonizer parameters when playing a SMF on the arranger keyboard.

I'm just a beginner in this area myself, so I'm clearly not the one to answer your question. My initial investigation into SysEx, though, led me to understand that SysEx commands vary greatly by manufacturer (hence the term, System Exclusive). I have a Yamaha kb, so I began with an article entitled "Changing effects on Yamaha keyboards using System Exclusive," found at: http://thomer.com/misc/sysx.html . It led me to the site I earlier referenced.

I'm sorry I can't answer more helpfully. I'm sure, though, that someone else will.

Good luck,

Charles

(I really think THIS one has potential to be helpful to you. See SYSEX tab at the top of page)

Same site, same material -- more graphical presentation:
