it records to pc hard disk through the usb at CD quality. With the card reader supplied in the UK package you can convert to MP3 or AAC and then play back internally from 7000 alone. A 64 MB SD card would only hold one CD quality audio track, but could hold 16 MP3 tracks or slightly more AAC at high quality.

an extra D/A and A/D conversion that will reduce quality. You need a very good A/D on an expensive soundcard not to degrade the audio output on the KN. Digital transfer removes all these problems and you can make the highest quality audio CDs irrespective of whether your pc soundcard costs £5 or £500; for instance my demo went straight into a laptop but the wave file quality is extremely high.

Question: Using the USB connection of the 7000, can you record directly via the digital inputs into a stand-alone hard disc multitrack recorder (not a computer)? Would some sort of converter box be necessary?

no because most are not usb master devices able to load drivers. The reasons for spending money on a dedicated hard disk recorder lessens with the 7k.
