I buried this in the Joe Zawinul thread, so I thought I'd give it a thread of it's own.

Just some meanderings on an old Weather Report ballad, reversioned. Live, one take, Piano style Mode.

ALL critiques welcomed! It's just a doodle, and not intended to be the whole piece, or even accurate, just got sad at the news and wanted to play something. Enjoy....

Rest in Peace, Joe

Diki, I'm sure it's just stupidity on my part, but how do you play "stuff" from the Roland board? Where is it?

There should be a 'Zawinul.mp3' link at the bottom of the first post. Click on it, and it should download to your computer. Play it there (it's up so new, I don't think that Sren has had time to make it stream, yet, plus I prefer the audio quality of the non-streamed stuff, anyway!).

Hope this helps...

Yes,
you have to sign in to see the link and download the song, but in this case it's well worth the while.
I have listened to the MP3 many times already and can testify that Diki really put his soul into this one.
Highly recommended!

I signed up awhile ago to hear some of Diki's stuff, well worth it, but I thought I remembered the same frustration of not being able to even see the file without signing in.
This is also a nice piece.

I remember Weather Report in concert in the 70's. Fabulous. One song though, Joe forgot to end with the rest of the band It was a very glaring mistake.

This was one one of Joe's signature tunes, and one of my favorites.

Thanks for sharing.

Diki: nice tribute to Zawinul. Was this entirely produced live on the G70 utilizing auto accompaniment or multi-tracked?
Either way, a nice showcase of not only your talent, but of the keyboard as well, and a convincing reason 4 me to more seriously consider a G70 again.

Unfortunately the only thing that's kept me from it is Roland's continued refusal to implement rootless jazz chord recognition. If you can help convince Roland to add that, I'll equally go to bat pushing for the return of the Chord Sequencer.

Yes, Scott... Just for you, all live, auto arranger!

Still no 'rootless' voicings, but Piano Style with Bass Inversion ON is a good substitute, especially when, like this one, you are just playing piano... (Piano Style needs at least three notes to trigger a chord change, so you can solo without the arranger going crazy).

The main thing for me is, forget the voicings, just listen to how good the piano sounds!

Diki,
I have this tune you recorded in my computer and I am requesting permission to share it with my several musician and non musician email lists.
What say you?
I will not send it out without your direct permsiion even though you published it in the public domain.

You are welcome to use it any way you want (short of commercial use - it's not licensed).

I went back and listened to the original today, and boy! There was SO much about this tune I had forgotten, but I hope I kept at least an 'impression' of it for you all...

One of my favorite things about the G70 is how well the styles track just regular piano playing, and how warm and detailed the main piano is. For the sort of stuff I enjoy, it really is the 'perfect piano'...

But thanks, everybody, for being so forgiving about the deconstruction of a great tune.

Great work Diki. That is such a beautiful piece and I really enjoyed your playing. It brought back many memories for me. Very moving though I couldn't help feeling sad that we have lost him. Anyone that hasn't heard Weather Report's Heavy Weather album really should. It is one of my all time favorites and shows what an brilliant artist Joe was. Every track on it is totally spectacular.

Thanks so much for your tribute. Joe would be so proud you celebrated his work like this.
