A friend of mine has a PSR-3000, and the LCD screen has apparently died... Nothing but a blank screen.

The LCD went out last year on a cold December day after transferring the keyboard from a playing job to home.

Everything else works, and plays perfectly, including the video out. You can navigate the keyboard with the video out, but obviously that's not practical.

He has offered to sell me this keyboard in the 'as is' condition, at a very reasonable price...

However it may not be that good of a deal if the LCD Screen would need replacing, which, I would think would be costly.

So, bottom line I'm looking for advise.

Anyone?

TIA

take it to a service center and get an estimate first. Or call yamaha parts/service get a price on the display ....If your good with electronics you could get to it & replace a few screws and a plug.

The screen is not easily replaced because of where it's located. It's beneath another board and the process takes a skilled technician. Call Yamaha Service at 714-522-9000 and get an estimate before making the purchase. BTW: You can also use an inexpensive DVD player for the screen, but you may have difficulty reading the bottom of the screen where the numbered buttons are displayed.

Good luck,

Gary

I found out the LCD screen alone cost $330
plus labor to install, which will probably be high.

I like Gary's idea...a cheap DVD player.

...tough decision...

Thanks for your opinions

I agree with Fran, Larry...you're better off not getting into a situation like this...better deals are out there on fully functioning instruments.

If I told you all the price, you may think otherwise... remember everything works and plays fine, its the LCD screen that's out, and the 'video out' can be used for display.
I could, and I emphasize 'could' live with the video out as a display.

Thanks again for the advise. I shall take it all into consideration. Sidebar: I should have taken Uncle Dave's offer...too late now.

So my decision is to keep a perfectly working PSR-2000, or sell the 2000, and have enough for this PSR-3000 with a defective LCD. In reality, it would be about an even trade, or better, money wise. And from what I've been told and read, the 3000 is light years ahead of the 2000.

Also there is a chance the LCD just needs repair and not replacement, although with my luck...

I know, I should have explained all this before asking opinions. I'm leaning toward selling the 2000, and buying the defective LCD 3000"

Anyway, any final thoughts now that more facts are revealed?

Would you rather have a PSR-2000 (perfect) or a PSR-3000 (defective LCD) ?

Thanks again!

Larry, even if it was free..The cost of the display and labor may exceed $600..I seen like new PSR3000's sell for $700..

Larry.
I sold a PSR000 to Violo – something happened in the shipping. It was working well at my home, when it got to Violo the screen would not come on. I took it back and had it repaired, $50, a connection came loose.

The repair could have been $150, $350 or not repairable as my Technics KN2000 was. Estimate gotten first followed by some good healthy thinking.

My Dad was always willing to walk away from a deal, a valuable lesson for me.

IMHO, John C.

I have heard this:

If you shine a flashlight on a dark, supposedly dead LCD screen, and you can see images, that the LCD screen is ok, but rather the back light is out.

Can anyone verify this to be true, as this is the case with the PSR-3000 in the topic.

This would, I think, be good news...agree?
Just a bulb? Naa...not my luck, too easy, uh.

PS: To whom it may concern, a flashlight is a torch.

Yep,

The flashlight works just fine. You'll only see a faint image, but you will see an image if the screen itself is OK and just the backlights are fried.
