Can the PA-3B or PA-3C adapters be subsituted with anything from Radio Shack? There much smaller and I was curious if you could get the same thing through Radio Shack for less.

As long as the adapter meets both the voltage and amperage requirments, and has the same polarity, then any adapter meeting those standards will suffice. Radio shack sells lots of adapters, however, most only go up to 12 volts DC. The PA-300 Yamaha adapter is a 16-volt DC power pack, which is now the norm for the PSR-1000, 2000 and 2100. To my knowledge, no one sells this type of adapter other than Yamaha and it goes for a hefty $75.

Squeak: The PA-3B is rated DC 12V 700mA so I believe the Radio Shack '12V/1000mA AC-to-DC' Power Adapter is the correct one to get:

The PA-3B output delivers 700mA while the above Radio Shack adapter delivers 1000mA. This is fine because your keyboard will draw ONLY the amount of current 'it actually needs'. A problem will arise only if you use an AC adapter which puts out 'less than' the required 700mA.

As far as the plug goes, take your PA-3B into the Radio Shack store and select the appropriate plug (adaptaplug) that matches the plug size/type of the PA-3B. A very IMPORTANT thing to remember is to be sure you select the plug with the correct polarity type required by your keyboard):

1. positive tip (+)
or
2. negative tip (-)

The Adapter Plug tip type (tip+ or tip-) is often specified in a schematic illustration situated right next to the actual plug input on the keyboard itself, and sometimes also in the owner's manual.

I would listen to Gary and be VERY CAREFULL what you plug into your KB other then the original factory A/C adapter.

Actually the adapter would be for the Yamaha QY-100. It uses the smaller adapter, and I was curious if I could buy a substitute at the Shack..

I will second the warning to be very careful. We've had no complaints about the quality of Radio Shack's adapters, but you only get to mess up on the polarity 1 time. Then you're off to the servicer for a non warranty repair.

My old PSR220 requires a PA-3/3B but I'm using one of those Radio Shack switchable voltage PSUs that puts out 800mA. I did some voltage measurments on it and found the following: set to 12V the off load voltage was 16V, at 250mA the output voltage was 13.5 V and at 800mA the voltage was 10V. Set to 9V the corresponding voltages were 12.2, 10.5 and 7.5. Not what you would call regulated. It works OK with the PSR at the 12V setting because the output chip can take 25V and the rest of the circuitry has regulators which can take care of the overvoltage. I wouldn't be surprised if the the QY has similar hardware.
