Because of this, it is good to have the OS and the music programs on one disk and the music data that you process, on another disk. If you have many tracks you should separate them on different drives. The best possible scenario is the OS on one disk, the music programs on several disks (depending on the amount) and the tracks on several disks (depending on the amount).

I know this because I have made software that analyzes how the environment affects the consumption of performance in a program.

To boost a computers performance running Windows XP, I suggest the following should be done:

1.Uninstall as many programs as you possibly can.
2.Make sure that you run as few programs simoultaneously as possible, check the startup entries in the registry and delete the unnecessary entries.
3.Use a maximum of 1/3 of the total disk space. If not enough disk space, then upgrade.
4.If you run much stuff in real-time, make sure you have so much RAM memory available that the computer seldomly needs to swap data.
5.Use NT file system, not FAT32.
6.Stop unnecassary windows services.
7.Defragment your drives on a regular basis.
8.Scan your computer for spyware on a regular basis.
9.Log on as a user with restricted access. (active directory consumes much)
10.Only install necessary programs.
11.Avoid running antivirus programs, firewalls etc.
12.Use a single color as wallpaper.
13.Inactivate active desktop.
14.Avoid running the computer in a network environment.
15.Use a hard drive and motherboard that supports native command queuing. SCSI or SATA.
16.Use a CPU with hyperthreading technology
17.Disable all available schedulars and automatic updates of all kinds.
18.Minimize all windows that are not used.
19.Select the combination of IDE devices and channels carefully.
20.Shut down the computer on a regular basis.
21.Disable IE caching.
22.Update the OS with service packs on a regular basis.
23.Update the drivers on all devices.

Probibly the most effective and simplest way to increase your systems overall speed is to clear out your computer's start up application files. Downloads from either payed programs or free internet downloads cram your system with start up files. Start up files take up valuable memory and drasticly slow down your computer.

This is a little lesson works on all windows operating systems.

1. Start by selecting Start > Run and opening the application.
2. In the run prompt type in "msconfig".
2. A window will open
4. Click on the "StartUp" tab on the upper right.
5. A list of checked applications will appear.
5 Most of the files are identifyable by the given name, or you can identify them by the given location just right of the name colum.
6. You do not need majority of the files including game files, multimedia files like quicktime, instant messanger files, Microsoft office files ect.
7. Uncheck your unneeded files (Do not uncheck Rundll files) and click apply. It will ask you to restart, do so.
8. When you restart succesfully a window will pop up telling you that the startup has been changed and wish to continue, check the do not show this message again, click ok and your done.

You will immediantly notice an increase in loading speed and start up speed do to the gained memory that the start up files have taken.

Another thing you can do is...

Windows XP operating system has preinstalled controls to alter how your OS runs. To begin do the following.

1.Start > Control Panel > System
2. A window will appear, click on the advanced tab
3. Where it says performance click settings
4. This will bring you to a window that allows you to alter your system to run for pure performance, appearance or custom.
5. If you want pure performance click the performance tab, but in cost it will look like Windows 2000 and earlier style. if you want to keep the looks of XP click performance and check the "Use visual styles on windows and buttons" Click apply and your done.

You won't see a huge change right away but it is noticable when your running something that takes up alot of virtual RAM and you need to open and close windows. With no loss you still get to keep the cool XP look.

Hope this helps everybody!

Phil
