I have a lead sheet with a Bb5 chord printed. This is NOT a Bb7 flat 5. All major chords have a 5. I'm confused.

Could it possibly be a B chord with a flat five.

If not, perhaps a Bb with only the one and five(open fifth?

Sorry I can't help with that chord, but does the B flat 5 work?

BTW - saw a GREAT tee shirt in Boston a couple of weeks ago:

E = Fb

I believe Bill is right...just two notes...A# and E# or if you prefer, Bb and F.

It's a power chord that's mostly used on guitar.

Thanks for the great link, Bill.

Thanks all. Bb and F sounds correct. How would I play that on an arranger (PSR3K)?

Just play Bb in the root with your fourth finger(ring finger) and the F with your thumb...the default split is at F# so it should be no problem.

You have written –
Bb5 Possibilities are;

1-Bb –5 or Bb flat 5 Same thing =Bb D E the E being that flatted fifth.
2-B b5 B D# F -- F being the flatted fifth.
3-Bb7 b5 Bb D E Ab E being the flatted fifth. Which I doubt, there must be a 7th written in the chord.

Or possibly a Bb chord with F in the bass.
Normally by looking at the chord progression you can take a reasonable guess at want they are asking for.

Hope this helps, John C.

What key is the piece in? And is the chord written as B b5 (that is, a B with a flat 5th) or is it written as Bb 5 (that is, a B flat open 5 chord -no 3rd). The key will make that usually obvious.

When in doubt, why not take a look at the actual notes in the sheet music? - it doesn't take too long to figure them out, even if you are not a fluent reader.
