I upgraded my desktop to service pack2, but my PC guru says to take it off and wait a month or so. He says that MS is working on a MAJOR fix for it, and warned me to stay clear till it's ready. Anyone heard anything like this yet?
My pc seems to run just fine at the moment.

I upgraded my laptop months ago, and the PC recently. No problems than I can tell.

Hi.

It may cause some problem on "older" PC's and also there
is a lot of software listed on MS web who don't seem to
be compatible to SP2. Many fixes for such software are
downloadable.

I've experienced problem to boot up after install SP2 on
a friends PC because of software who did not like SP2 at
all, but it was very easy to uninstall SP2 in "safe mode"
and the PC was back exactly as before.

We're running SP2 on several PCs and Laptops without any
problem at all, in fact it seems to run even more stable
than ever, not seen a blue screen or a crash for months.

As we've seen many times here at the SZ forums, they say:
"If it aint broke, don't fix it".
Maybe a good idea, but myself I've always have to try out
new stuff whatever happens.

Cheers

WOW ... this is enlightening ... I don't know if it has anything at all to do with it, but I started having my speaker problems AFTER Win XP sp 2 was downloaded!!!
So far we've been able to make certain it's not hardware (we've changed the speakers and sound board, at DELL's expense, thank you) ... DELL had asked me if I D/L any software and I didn't even think about sp 2 because the updates are automatic ...
This shouldn't be an age problem (unless it's mine!!! ) because I just got the PC last March......
Thanks for the hint ...

UD, ABSOLUTE POPPYCOCK!!!!

I've been using SP2 for months with no issues at all on all 5 of my home desktops. The only little kafuffle was with ESPN sportzone not loading in my browser when I first started using Sp2. Amazingly, a few days after the official release, ESPN updated their site and all is fine now.

I highly recommend you deploy it to your desktop. It's safer and more secure.

I upgraded to SP2 back in Sept 2004. Not a single problem experienced whatsoever running ANY of my many music & app software programs. I would expect (by now) that it's safe for everyone to finally upgrade, as SP2 includes a number of critically important OS improvements. - Scott

UD, look for updated software/drivers for your printer.
If there are any, your problem will most likely be
solved.

Good Luck.

UD, I agree with Gunnar, check to see if there are upgraded drivers for your printer.

Are you having problems with any other USB devices?

Now your making me feel guilty for leading your down this road.

Hello Dave and others!

Oh, do not even mention SP2. It was nothing but trouble. In fact installing it on my ThinkPad was a total disaster.
It clashed with almost all the software that I have to use on daily bases.
Even my screen-reader application (ZoomText 8) was blocked by that monster.
I had to disable Norton Antivirus (also updated on regular bases) and kill about a dozen USB drivers in order to be able to restart and perform "system restore".

Until Ai2 update ZoomText to be compatible with SP2 (and vice-versa, because that's what it usually takes to make things work in Windows) I will have to avoid SP2.

But since in your case you're only having a USB driver problem all you will probably have to do is update the driver. The rest should work fine.
Good luck!

Just the other day I read an article in a recent (February) issue of a PC mag that many are having problems similar to what 3351 experienced.

I just upgraded to SP2 this week, it's been several days and so far so good.

I guess it just depends on what you have on your system. Every Windows upgrade is like that. Some people have smooth sailing and some have horror stories. You never know which category you're going to be in till you try it.

Good points Marilyn, but it is a good idea to read what's
written on MS webpages about what hard / software who is
compatible or not, and if nessesary to see if there are any
updates to find before install SP2.
You know, time goes fast, specially in the electronic and
software industry, and things we feel still are brand new
are all that sudden (more than a year or two) "pretty old
and outdated".
We sure live in a exciting era.

I received SP2 on a CD and have not yet installed it on any of my computers.
MY information is to update any and all program drivers currently in the computer before installing SP2.
Most New computers will have the newest drivers but older computers often do not have their programs updated.
I have a few more new drivers to chase down as there are Many more applications in my work computer then most have, then I will install SP2 in all the computers starting with the new lap top first as it is only occaisonal use.

I have a newer IBM Thinkpad laptop, about 6 months old. It was shipped just before SP2 was released. I installed SP2 and it and it caused all sorts of connectivity problems with my wireless network and internet. Other programs were unstable. I called IBM Tech Support and they told me they do NOT recommend installing SP2. It has many known conflicts with certain IBM software that runs on my computer. They advised updating all drivers and running solid virus protections and/or firewall. I did a System Restore to roll things back and everything is fine now. . Interstingly, I just got an IBM memo indicating they have updated some of their software to be SP2 compatible. I suspect they will have to move in that direction because all future Windows XP updates will build on SP2.

In general, Laptop computers are notoriously incompatible with Microsoft Operating systems. That is because they have varying Driver requirements specific to the Mobile design. Microsoft can't seem to get this right in their operating systems.

I would not measure the stability of XP SP2 based solely on the findings of a few Laptop users, UNLESS, you are installing to a Laptop.

UD, how are you going with SP2 on the Desktop? Don't leave us hangin' bro?

I've mentioned the problems I've been having with my 5.1 surround sound spkr system, and at first did not realize that it started AFTER sp2 was downloaded ... I'm still not certain there's a connection between the two, but through e-mails to the techs from Creative (I use the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 sound card) it was suggested that I un-install sp2 ... well, I was doing that yesterday, step by step, un-installing each sp2 'segment' when all of a sudden ... the dreaded 'blue screen' error ... I called my nephew who makes his living working on PC systems, and he said the error had to do with one of the drivers ... Later, working with the DELL tech (their tech support is great, in that they are very attentive and keep on top of a problem until it is resolved) we went through a series of 'diagnostics', doing stuff in 'safe mode', restoring the system to an earlier date (which it would NOT let me do) etc. and we could not get rid of the 'blue screen' error ...
I'm going to start a new thread on this to ask for some advice ....

Its crap, dont even touch it. I have a very new comp with most of the best components. I installed it, and it loads so much crap on your system. I havent had any malfunctions that ive encountered, just noticed speed decreasments.

If its not broke, dont fix it.

Phil

Sorry gang .... I took a little holiday and spent some time with an old friend in Florida .......3 days of wine, woman, song, sunshine, parties and hot tubs! (#2 was my favorite, and NO ..... she's NOT even a redhead!)

As for SP2 ...... so far everything works except my DSL and the printer after a reboot. I have to initialize the dsl connection in the control panel b4 I can use my ISP ( MSN ).

My PC runs 24/7, so it's not a big deal, so far....I'll keep you all posted. Thanx for all the comments !
