Wow, I never expected to be looking for the bar tab, but in this case I'm referring to a quick link at the top of the General Aranger page. Nigel, were you able to come up with something. This has become a popular page, at least for the regular barflys such as myself, and it would be neat to get here in a single click.

Thanks for providing this wonderful forum,

Gary

Yeah, I think this forum has been a great addition to the SZ.
Second that Gary!

OK, sorry I was slow getting this up but now all new pages will have a link directly below the upper top left Synth Zone logo "Visit The Bar For General Chat". This will be there in all forums on the BBS.

Nigel, you use the word "chat" often when you actually mean "discussion." The word "chat," on the internet, to my knowledge, means live, interactive postings. A chatroom is where you post and others post back in real time. A forum is not real time.

Point being, your link uses the word "chat" and if I did not know what "The Bar" really is, I would never click that link because I do not do chat rooms.

You could solve it by saying "Visit the bar, a shoot-the-breeze forum" or "Visit the bar for general discussion" or "Visit the bar for posts about anything and everything" or "Visit the bar, an Open Mic (general discussion) forum" or any number of phrases.

I think I've seen the word "chat" used just as often for emails and other forms of typed discussion on the net. It's a valid point I suppose, that some may confuse it with a chat room, but this is a very specialized little corner of the web and anyone that "gets" what Nigel offers here will certainly stay for the merits it has to offer. Anyone else think that the word "chat" only refers to "live" chat?
I'm curious now.

Look, I just did it to help. I have designed many web sites and I know a thing or two about design. There are even usability gurus who get paid enormous sums of money to make every link as clickable as possible. You think I just wanted to bitch? I stand by what I said, "chat" is not the word to use for a forum. No biggie, carry on. Doesn't matter to me.

Thanks Nigel, You're a gentleman and a scholar, and I must say there are very few of us left in this old world.

Cheers,

Gary

Yes I'll change it because it doesn't really matter to me one way or the other, because I agree some people may misinterpret what "chat" means in todays online world. Funny, I thought chat was casual conversation which is always going to be true and will continue to exist even without computers and the Internet. But because we are using computers on the Internet here I agree I will try to avoid misunderstandings by using a term that is less likely to be misunderstood .... well for now at least.

While it has been suggested on the forum that live chat would be a good thing I tend to disgree. The main reason being that once it has passed only those present at the time will ever see it. I prefer "chat" ( excuse the term please ) to be a permanent document that everyone can read and participate in irregardless of the time zone they are in.

So I'll change the word "chat" to read "general discussion" which is much shorter and more concise ..... NOT.

Nigel,

I wouldn't loose any sleep over the nomenclature. Where Semilive hails from they spend a lot of time "Jawin'" about things. When I lived in Texas, they had a different expression that represented conversation, and out in Spokane, Washington, where I lived for three years, they brought home the groceries in a "Poke." I believe everyone knew what the link referred to.

Thanks again for your dilligent efforts and devotion to keeping the site active,

Gary

It's no big deal for sure, but I must agree with Semi--"chat" on the internet usually refers to real-time, live exchanges, thus the term "chat room".
