Some midi files that play perfectly well on my technics kn3000 don't work on the kn7000, either in direct play or loaded in to sequencer. All the information is there but all the channels show as SILENT. If I click on to an instrument it will then sound. Can anyone tell me why it does not read some files this way, whilst others files apparently in the same format (General Midi)work perfectly well?

Yours puzzled,

Jaro

Hi Jaro
This has happened to me on occasion and I wondered why also. In my case some tracks indicated silent on the KN but worked fine on the computer.

No help but you are not alone

Hi Jaro,

I haven't encountered this particular problem but perhaps the troublesome MIDI files have Patch/Bank No's that are incorrect for the KN7000.
I presume the problem occurs for all methods of loading (GM to GM/GM2, GM to NX, etc.).
If you have a suitable sequencer program on your computer you can probably ascertain exactly which Patch/Bank No. combinations are being used in the troublesome files.

Cheers

Thanks to Bernie and Len C for answering.
I have Cakewalk Pro to look at the Patch/Bank No.s being used. i suppose it will be trial and error to see which sounds can be read by the KN7000?
I'll give it a try when I have a spare half hour.

Hi Jaro,

If my theory has any merit it is more than likely that the problem is in the Bank No. as you say all channels are set to silent. The KN7000 Reference Guide (Blue Book) that came with your keyboard has a complete listing of Patch/Bank No's. used in the KN7000. GM Basic and GM2 both use MSB 121. GM basic uses only LSB 0 whereas GM2 accesses the alternative sounds through LSB 1, 2 etc.
If you do not have the Reference Guide I have the KN7000 Patch/Bank No. listing in an Excal file and can email it to you.

Cheers

Hi Len C, Yes I've got the blue book, but I'm afraid all you try to explain regarding the different formats is "double dutch" to me!
Please identify the list I should be looking for and how do i change the "SILENT" channels to KN7000 "ACTIVE" ones.
Sorry but I just don't understand much about MIDI, but I think you are on to the problem, so thanks for your input so far

Cheers

Hi Jaro,

I don't have a KN7000 so I don't know if this will help or not but there are basically two types of midi files.

Type 0 and Type 1.

A short explanation of the difference is that Type 1 places the channels on different tracks and Type 0 puts them all together.

I've noticed that sometimes I have to load a Type 0 into a program like Power Tracks and convert it to a Type 1 files before it will play even on the computer. I'm not certain why. Alec would most likely have a better explanation.

Hi Jaro,

Sorry I haven't replied sooner but this time of year gets a little busy and I have been having a few health problems as well. I suggest you email me one or two of the troublesome MIDI files so that I can examine them and perhaps provide some further assistance.

Cheers
Len

To SHCOX (Heather) Thanks for suggestion. The kn7000 uses type 0 and I am aware of that so it's not the problem, but thanks for input
