I know many of you have make extensive use of MIDI sequences as backing tracks. I have a 64 meg SD card I am thinking of dedicating to MIDI files. I have 200 or so on my laptop arranged on my Yamaha SQ softsynth playlists. They are arranged by era (20.s,BB,etc). I have songs from Alex,Frank, and Bill Norrie on another SD.

First question:
If I put them on SD, I probably get better quality of sound but I have to play them in the same key they are written in. I can, of course, tranpose to another key, but that does help when a sequence is done in B MAJ and I know the song in Eb eg.. If I use my laptop I can adjust my 7000 to play in any key I want. Am I wrong ?

Second:
As of now I use mostly 7000 panel memory banks stored on SD's and use MIDI only to supplement. I rarely do dances (yet), and if I did, I would arrange tunes by era and beat and tempo. Once I put tunes on my SD, what is the best way to organize them, and change the order ?

I have a card reader, but have not tried the SD tool of Cees and Rikki's structure. I am just venturing forth and don't know exactly which path to follow.

This is probably clear as mud, but at this point, so is my mind.

Thanks

Bernie.

Answer No. 1
What you should do is LOAD each MIDI file into the keyboard memory. Then transpose to the key you normally use to play the tune. Now SAVE the transposed file to SD Card/diskette. You can now use the tranposed file and play along with it.

Thank you, Mike. This was a major hurdle, and the answer was so simple.

Hi Bernie,
my structure on how I organized my files was a only a way of organizing the KN7 website .cst's into specified custom groups, ie if I was looking for a tango style , all i have to do is load in custom file ( song) Tango and all the Tango's get loaded into custom area. From there I audition and pick the one that best suits the tune I'm working on.

If it needs adjusting, I copy it into the composer memory and make any alterations.
From there I can either save it back into a new custom memory group made up of "my favourite songs" or save it as a style to be used with that tune.

If you also followed the list on how I organized the computer and folders etc, and by using the spreadsheat, you should also be able to identify which particular .cst it is.

best wishes
Rikki

I loaded an SD SOUND sequence from the card, went to sequencer/range edit/transpose/all and brought the key up to my key. I then saved it back to the slot where it was. I reloaded and the melody was correct, but,the accomp was not. What happened?

unfortunately by transposing all tracks of the midi file you have transposed the drums along with the melody tracks of the midi file, and now all the drum sounds will be mapped to the completely wrong notes.

to transpose a midi file you need a two stage operation. Now transpose track 10 in the opposite direction with the same number of steps as you transposed all the tracks originally.

Then you will have a correctly transposed midi file to save.

You could of course transpose 15 tracks individually, leaving out track 10, but the 2 stage operation is probably rather easier.

Thank you, Alec.
When your book and video arrives I may not have to ask so many elemental questions.
