Yamaha has announced that the replacement for their 9000 will be called "Tyros" and is scheduled for release in Sept 2002.

Unlike Technics, Yamaha shows a full frontal picture of the kb in their advert. Brief description as follows:-

61 keys,
coloured backlit transparent buttons.
Presumably no built in loudspeakers - there are no grills but the picture shows a speaker mounted on each end of the board and this is described as "an optional independent hi-fi system with bass subwoofer."

Yamaha modestly claim that it uses a unique sound generation system not heard on any other instrument, with ultra realistic mega voicing, a hi-resolution colour screen with new user interface and operating system. Oh yes, and an "ergonomic control surface using new materials." The results, they say, will overturn all preconceptions of what can be achieved in a keyboard instrument.

No Price given.

I haven't checked yet but there may be more details on Yamaha's site at www.yamaha-music.co.uk

Incidentally, Technics suggest you register at www.technicskn7000.com for a free video demonstration.

That's all folks,

Peter

its the screen and ??possibly?? a similar operating system from the cvp209 with the speakers from the 9000pro with some cosmetic changes (silver, no controls on speakers). 96MB of wave rom according to the advance info with an interesting strum guitar voice.

Oh! Dear
It seems that Yamaha are a bit late with their design for the Tyros. If anything ever looked like a dead ringer for the KN6/65k then this has got to be the prime candidate.Oh!well Yamaha back to the drawing board I guess

I am not surprised in the least. It seems Yamaha have been stuck for something new & innovative to take the lead since bringing out the PSR8000 & lets be honest the 9000 did not exactly set the world alight & it seems that the Tyros is about to head down that same dusty road

Well, I wouldn't go as far as that yet, Johnnie. I had a 9000 with my 6000 for a time, and I had a 9000pro with my 6500 for a time. I thought the 9000 better than eg 8000 and 6000 in relative terms in their day. It has advantages if you want a harmoniser above all else, and can put up with the styles. The 'session' type styles added on the pro were in direct response to complaints about the styles in comparison to the competition. More of these are promised on the tyros.
A taste of what the operating system ?might? resemble can be seen on the cvp209. Whether its as easy to use as technics remains to be seen. I'll wait till I've had a play with one.

Hi Technicsplayer
Now the very last thing I would buy to double up & go with my upgraded KN6000 would be a PSR9000 or pro.The KN as an all round arranger has many advantages over the 9000 of which the purchase of in my opinion would be superfluous & if it was a harmoniser I was after I would prefer to go for one of the dedicated bits of kit.
My personal choice as a buddy for my KN is the Korg Trinity, although not the latest but they are about & are cheap enough & in my opinion still knock the 9000 for six.
Regards Johnnie

I can see your point about a new set of samples to complement the 6k pattern generating functions and provide a mix of voices, and the second hand prices. It all depends on many personal factors, Trinity is well into pro territory, with sound editing complexity to match.

Of course you are right & I agree with you about personal choice so much so I would still have a problem getting my head round buying a 9000 to compliment the KN.
But then we have the KN7000 just round the corner which I am sure is going to be delightful (Can't wait).
I look forward to you review on the 7000 in the August Techplus
