Both Deane and I are alumni of University of North Texas ( formerly North Texas state)
which has a world renowned music program, highly regarded in the jazz world too.
My drum instructor was Ed Soph who performed with Stan Kenton, Woody Herman among other luminaries. I believe Deane was a student around the same time Ed Soph was a student at UNT.

Here’s a clip of Ed Soph and the famous One O’Clock Lab Band on a tour in Mexico in 1966. The band is still going strong today, and attracting talented students from all over the world.

Enjoy!

Ed Soph is a good friend and was my drum set teacher too
I was at NTSU from 1966-1970. Ed came back
From his summer tour with either Woody Herman
or Stan Kenton in 1966. I was blown away the
First time I heard the One O’clock band.

Those must have been exciting time at North Texas, Deane. I was at NT from 1990-1994. Ed Soph was my teacher, I still review things he taught me back then. He has several instructional videos on YouTube that I always have my students watch. Music is an infinite , never ending study!
