I always find one of the hardest things to get right on an arranger is learning how to push VERY slightly with your LH, so that chord changes get read right, but to be able to drag slightly (or more than slightly!) with the RH, as soloists and singers are want to do…

I’m still struggling with that one!

If you have a DAW, it’s easy to check whether your timing is getting pushy or lazy by looking for whether your solo track tends to be slightly early or late compared to the grid. It’s a good way to spot trends if you do it on a bunch of tracks.

It’s fixable if you are preparing a demo rather than a simple live warts and all recording… just take the pushy or draggy track and slip it a few ticks either way until the overall ‘feel’ sits a bit more in the pocket. That can often quickly rescue a nice solo that gets a bit pushy… 🎹😎
