A few weeks back Donny said he would like to hear my recording of "Mary Did You Know" ... it's getting close to Christmas, so here it is ...
I actually recorded this back in 2013 ... I made a quick backing track using a Pa900 style, pads, and added one track ...
Anyone who would like to post their version of this song is welcome to do so - I won't be offended ... I'm sure there are folks here who can do a better job than I have ...

Great rendition of a great song. Oddly enough I was just going through some Christmas songs on the 4x and was doing this one all alone in my office/studio when I stopped to rest for a few minutes.

Super performance Tony! Love the track and your vocal! You did a super job - nice solo work and background vocals too! Thanks for sharing and for stoking the "Holiday Spirit"!

Tony Thank you so much for remembering my request
you certainly did a spectacular job and made the KORG Pa900 shine!! clap clap .
I remember at that time we were all sharing songs..
unlike today when people think your not playing at all...
your version inspired me to record this spiritual song too using the quick record on my S970 also....
I just happen to have saved it on my PC so here it is.
And yes would love to hear other SZ'ers do a version also.

No one will want to hear mine. I use a Pentatonix K-Track, and sing with 3 more harmony voices plus my own. Same for Hallelulia. Great arrangements that I just can't achieve with a KB.

You misunderstood me - I meant no one HERE because I'm only singing, and not playing at all.

Had to revisit this comment.
I will play songs that I absolutely HATE ... if the audience wants to her it, AND I think I can do a respectable version. Thankfully, there are very few times I have to refuse a request. It's not all about the $$$ - it's about pleasing the client ... but the cash appreciation is nice, too.

Tony as usual I doubt your going to hear anyone else post another version of this song which is sad as here talking trumps playing.
But maybe we'll be surprised?

Morning, Fellow Arranger Zoners:

I took the time to listen to all of your song-posts of this now classic Christmas Hymn. I know, it is not a Hymn in the minds of many... but sung as such, it is heart rendering.

We have a choir at our little Methodist Church here in West Mayberry... and it includes a lady vocalist who has the ability to bring this song to life... and the audience to tears. I don't have audio or video to share but I wish I could.

Thank you all for posting. I hope we can all put aside our tiny differences for a few days and let the message of "Mary Did You Know" sink in. Collectively, you are such a unique group, mostly Arranger Performers... and I would be saddened to see this website sink into smugness like so many music sites have done... and now have disappeared.

Olive Branches all around.

Merry Christmas... ----Dave

HEAR HEAR Dave! Thanks for the comment and for listening to all our renditions! It's a beautiful melody and though it has a simple chord structure (less is more!), the melody, chords and lyrics can sure stir the emotions. So happy to hear the church group is using this song too! Happy holidays!

Hopefully, this 'Kumbaya' moment will last a long time ...

Randy, I REALLY enjoyed your interpretation THANK YOU...
But to be honest, - and I know it would have taken a lot of work - I was looking forward to a sax version with a backing track of your own creation ...

Great renditions, Tony and Randy. I recorded this several years ago and recorded it on my S-950's onboard recorder. Pretty sure that I posted it here as well, but cannot recall.

Click here to play Mary Did You Know

Merry Christmas Everyone,

Thanks Tony! I do think the Kumbaya will last! Just sayin'! Thanks for the kind words. I promise that soon I will get my "act" together and post a combined sax/keys tune or two! Been a while since I did that. Thanks again!

Randy and Donny, thanks for the compliments, guys. And, yes, I would love to hear Chas and Russ do this song on the B3 - I'm confident they would do fantastic renditions.

Sorry, I won't be doing it for several reasons. First, I have to sadly report that my main ax, my KeyB Duo Mk111, died on me about two weeks ago and although heartbroken, I have not yet made any effort to get it repaired (if it's even possible). It started with a low hum (like a ground lift hum) which I ignored for about a month and then suddenly while I was playing, it let out an ear-splitting blast (which I was sure had blown my EV Sx250 speakers). I yanked out every wire I could get my hands on while simultaneously trying to unplug everything. A line mixer, BK7m (my 'drum machine'), and my VP770 were also plugged in but I knew instinctively that it was the organ. I confirmed this later with earphones into the organ. Sorry to diverge like this but I feel like crying every time I think about it.

I have three other organs BUT, my Nord C2D (and 3300) is packed up in a storage closet where they've been since I stopped gigging; my Nord C1 is currently set up as a controller for my Legend Exp (which works very well, BTW). The problem is, that this setup doesn't even come close to my KeyB soundwise, even though the Legend Exp is supposed to have the same engine as the full-size Legend (which is supposed to be a replacement for and improvement on, the KeyB). That is pure BS. Unless I got a defective unit the Legend Exp was a big disappointment for me. Wow, and this is only reason 1 smile smile.

The other reason is that although it's a simple but beautiful song, I don't (personally) think it lends itself very well to Jazz. It's one of those melodies that's too 'pretty' to be 'messed' with. I went to YouTube to get some ideas on a jazz approach and listened to maybe 15-20 jazz or 'jazzed-up' versions and I didn't like ANY of them. Most featured Sax (one of my favorite instruments) and they just left me cold. This is definitely a 'vocal' piece. Loved the Pentonic version put up by Uncle Dave. All the Synthzone versions were as good or better than the professional and semi-professional versions I heard on YouTube. I thought Donny's performance was one of his best ever. I had heard it before and praised it back then. Randy did his usual flawless job and Tony and Gary gave very moving performances of this lovely tune.

Sorry for this endless post. Just didn't want to ignore or reject a request without giving a reason.

Thanks Chas appreciate it,.....
I can understand the difficulty in doing a jazz version of this particular song for sure,...not impossible,...
but unique in that capacity for sure. I hope you can get the keyboard serviced asap & and a quick turnaround too so you can get back to playing it as it sounds dear to your heart.

Take care

Chas, so sorry to hear of your equipment failures, and I sincerely hope you are able to facilitate repairs at a reasonable cost.

I would be hard pressed to do this song in any format other than the one I recorded. As you said, it is a beautiful song and converting it to a jazz format would be quite difficult at best.

Good luck,

Gary cool

chas ... THAT is a BUMMER my friend ... hope you get it fixed really soon ... in the meanwhile, what are you playing for your own enjoyment? ... and what about rehearsing with the group?

I fully understand your not wanting to try a Jazz version of this song ... I have a number of Christmas/Holiday Jazz compilations, and I must say not ALL songs lend themselves to a Jazz version ... wink

BUT, that being said, I wouldn't mind hearing some other 'Christmas' song played by you in a Jazz style, once you get an 'ax' worthy of us to hear ... smile

Thanks Tony. I so wish I could sing again, but as the lung problem continues to worsen, my time at the mic is very limited these days. I hope to try one after my breathing treatments this evening. Might be able to croak out an off the wall Christmas tune.

Thanks again, old friend,

Gary cool

I'll try to find a semi-decent recording of me doing this song. I love the song but I feel I don't do it justice.

I wish it were that simple. I'd gladly pay for an exact duplicate but that's no longer possible as it's been replaced by the Legend (distributed and supported by Viscount). My experience with the Legend Exp (which 'they' claim has the same 'engine' as the console and is a replacement/upgrade to the Mk111) makes me unwilling to buy a Legend until I'm able to play one for myself. My problem is that I have no idea who can or will service it. I'll start putting out feelers tomorrow. Best scenario; if a local tech could talk to KeyB (Italy) and fix it locally (it ain't exactly lightweight smile ).

As to Tony's question, " what are you playing for your own enjoyment? ... and what about rehearsing with the group? ". I have plenty of keyboards to keep me entertained; Crumar SEVEN (Rhodes clone), Studiologic NC2x (utility keyboard), Fantom G7 (not the new one but still a TOTL WS), 3 controller KB's for VST's and modules (49//61/76), Triton, Motif ES, PA1x pro, Tyros 2, BK7m, VP770, Nord C1/Legend Exp, and a host of other modules, voice processors, fx processors, and outboard gear. Since I don't use some of them very frequently, my main problem is remembering how to operate them all. Old age is not helping.

As for rehearsing, I have a rehearsal room separate from my studio which has room to set up drums and accommodate more musicians. That's where my organ (KeyB) resides, along with my VP770 and BK7m. So far since the organ fail, it's only been Bob (guitar) and Cordell (sax) so we just play in the studio. We play a lot of 'Grover Washington' so I mostly play the SEVEN (although I'm no Richard Tee smile ). Gotta' get off my butt and get my sweetie fixed. Sad, sad, sad.

With cheesy I mean to sweet. That’s why I don’t like most arrangers anymore today. They sound to sweet. Not only Yamaha but also Korg. Another problem especially with Yamaha raat they use way too much effects on the sound. I don’t like that either I want a clean sound with a little reverb. That’s why I still prefer the sound of the Korg pa80. It use a real synth engine the Triton and I like that sound. Good news for me Korg will release a Korg Triton for the iPad soon. The G70 demo from Fran also doesn’t sound cheesy. Sound a little like music from the eighties my fav music period.

Hmmmmm?..I see, ...all that you mention can easily be suited, tweaked, and tailored to your own individual sound tastes easily.
If it's a cheesless synth workstation you desire there are also many many choices on the market to play also...

Its easier to change an instrument to your liking with less effects already but how much you change an Yamaha arranger it still sound cheesy.

Sequenced on the G70, saved as a midi capture.. loaded into the E-A7, played back and recorded within the E-A7, using the sounds from the E-A7, as a wav file.. Uploaded to Box.net and linked (posted) to SZ.

Then I made a cup of tea smile
