Here's something I posted on PSR Tutorial forum, in response to another post. Jingleman and I thought it might be appropriate to post here as well. "

Your user styles and registrations [from PSR S950] will work fine. I am in the process of helping a friend with this exact transition.
HOWEVER, we have found that there are often better styles in the SX900, so you might want to consider going through each registration and experimenting with some of the new styles to see if there is improvement.
We often make the mistake of trying to make our new arranger sound exactly like our old one.
Just one thing among many that I have recently discovered: Limit file names to 12 or fewer characters. We tried to load CDG files and they were great, except some of them failed to show up. I contacted Yamaha and the tech suggested checking the length of the file names, and he was 100 percent correct. I'm not certain if this applies to ALL file names or just the CDG files.
Bear in mind if you do use CDG files, and shorten the name of the MP3s, you will also have to change the name of the associated lyrics file (CDG) to be exactly the same and stay in the same folder.
Probably not many will use CDGs but this might help those that do.
Still, having all those Regs to start with will definitely make the transition easier.

Thanks for sharing Don. This should help a lot of us when importing multiple file types.

Hi Don,
So was that the problem you had with the files you mentioned the other day, ie not showing up, they were cdg ? If I remember correctly.

Not to answer for Don Rikki...but I believe that is correct. By shortening the titles of the cdg files, they were able to read them all. Someone also mentioned that the file name with title, punctuation and extension can only have a length of 12 characters.
Thanks,
Mitch & Don (Sorry for Intercepting your response Don)

Yes, they were MP3 files, associated with CDG (Karaoke).
The Yamaha technician told me to limit the file names to 12 characters. All of them work after renaming them with the shorter names.

Thanks for clearing that up Don. Maybe the guy on PSR Tut was referring to something else
when he mentioned 50 characters.

Keep in mind there is still a limit to the number of files and folders that can be in the root directory and also the number of files in a folder. I'm not sure what the exact number is, but I believe it may be 250 files or folders.

Good luck,

Gary cool

The number of files per folder has been vastly increased in the SX
I think it is 1500 now, but don't remember for certain.
