Here's my second attempt. Trying to follow your suggestions. First thing I lowered the tune a half step. Transpose feature sure us nice! Tried to sing out a little more and was thinking about support. I used no mike at all on this. Sat the recorder on the kb and went for it. Again, don't tell me how good it is. I do believe I got rid of some of the pitchiness & used no pitch correction to do it! Tell me what else to work on to improve it. I'm going to keep at this until I get comfortable with posting my stuff because I'll know I'm getting better.

Have you set your gain levels to record properly at max before distortion before you start?

Earl ... I had to turn the volume on my PC up quite a bit ...
Also, I think the key might still be a shade too high ... lowering it another 1/2 step or 2 might allow you to 'sing out' more ... seems you might be straining for those higher notes ...
But keep at it ... singer

Hi Earl,

I forgot to bring my earbuds to work today so I just listened on my ipdad. It was a bit too low the volume, but I do think the timing was way better this time. The drum flls seemed to be falling on the down beat as they should.

Earl, the volume level was about the same as the first recording - much too low. Additionally, this time, instead of 60 cycle hum, there was a fair degree of distortion, indication an impedance mismatch between the output of the keyboard and the input of the recorder.

I adjusted the volume using Audacity to -0.6 db using Audacity/effect/normalize.

Your vocal volume is still buried in the keyboard backing, and you still seem to be singing at the top of your vocal range. As Tony suggested, try lowering the chord using the transpose feature on the keyboard - drop it to -3, which would be the same as singing in the chord of "A". It should fit your vocal range better.

If I recall, you were using a stand alone recorder to record the song. I would try using audacity and record this as a multi-channel project, which would provide you with much more latitude.

If you still have my telephone number I can walk you through your problems over the phone anytime most evenings after 5 p.m..

Here's a link to the song after I Normalized the volume: 2nd Shot

Hope this helps,

Gary

I advise you to use the line input on the recorder. The built-in mics are o.k., but nowhere near the level of the line ins.

OK, thanks again. I will get the right cable to record using the line input. And I'll lower the key some more. I was doing it in G and had brought it down to Gb. Also played around and bought it down as dar as D, but that wasn't all that good.

Keeps getting better so keep trying. F might be a good compromise.

Hey, Earl:

Sorry I'm late. Neighborhood kids have screwed up my Wi-Fi so I'm having to use the primary computer. I listened and it still needs more volume... but sounded better. Don't give up. Nothing wrong with trial and error... that's a good way to learn... as long as you believe it is bringing you toward the light at the end of the tunnel.
