HI . I just sold my 3 year old PSR S970 for a very good price as I was not using it but now Im getting the itch and missing my board. Looking at the PA1000 but I once had a PA1x and hated the sounds compared to Yamaha and went straight back to Yamaha. Wondering if I would have the same experience again. The S975 is too small an upgrade to buy new IMO. I always had a gripe with the S970 speakers (Used to have a s900) which had amazing speakers. So now Im thinking Korg PA1000 Or Psr S975 or Wait !!

My impression is that the choice is in fact rather limited. And it gets more difficult because this kind of products is rather expensive. There isn’t one keyboard which does it all. Buying several of them could be some kind of a solution, if the resources allow it, but in the same time it can turn into some kind of addiction later. I guess there’ll always be a need for compromises. In my case not having it all forces me to play a $150 guitar of just not to play at all, to go outside, to pay more attention to different things and maybe I’m even feeling better this way, I don’t know.

If the styles, navigation, and ergonomics of pa1000 (or another) are to your liking, think about supplementing the sounds with a small sound module like a Ketron sd1000 that can sit right on top. Has terrific sounds..

How are the speakers on the PA 1000 compared to the Yamaha s970/975.the speakers on my 975 sounded very boomy and in live gigs where I only used inboard speakers I was always asked to increase the volume.

Hi Sunster:

Good luck in your quest. I recently acquired a 970 and am enjoying it's many capabilities. If money were no object, I would begin a "replacement search" by checking out the Yamaha Genos. Of course there are many great competing Keyboard/Arrangers appearing on the market all the time. Let us know what you finally decide if it is convenient.

Regards, ----Dave

I may suck at math, but these numbers suggest that you only plan to play this instrument 10 times a year?

Will be going to audition a Pa1000 in the next hour or so as I want to have a first hand feel of the instrument before I buy it since it is a big investment. Will let you know my thoughts. I just sold the s970 so played for a while thus the Yamaha feel is fresh in my mind and fingers. Will be interesting to see how much the pa1000 has evolved after the Pa1x which was a mistake. I bought it and sold in within a month.

Hi All. Finally took the plunge and went for the Pa1000. Demoed it in the flesh and I was truly impressed. Yes there were some things missing like the piano sounds and guitars like the yamaha but their was a lot to like. Late night weekends coming up. I shall post my thoughts after I delve into it.

I saw this on the way back home from the music store. To be honest it would be too much to carry around and also with my sore back with be a handful. Not to mention its not in my budget at this point. But thanks for the suggestion.

Try all the Keysets (OTS). There are some really good guitars and pianos in this keyboard.
Let us know if you need help.

The Yamaha concert and nylon guitars..much fuller than treble sounding Korg. Anyone able to modify similar Korg sounds to more resemble that of Yamaha? Or ever tried?

Just finished playing my first hours and I must say it was very very enjoyable. I don't miss my s970 and I guess I'm over tuts feeling I had with the older korg Pa1x. This is an entirely new animal. Connected my mic Nd sang away. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Also tweaked some of the instruments to my taste. Will have a music filled weekend for sure.

don't forget to play with the eq and compressor settings. they will make that 1000 roar. I like the latin setting and also the rock setting. They are both great. Have fun.

I miss the sustain button from the s970 and don't use a pedal. Is there any way to assign sustain for the piano on the assignable switch on the pa1000?

Yes, there is. Just go to Global, Controllers, Assignable Switch and select it. No need to save, as it will remember it.

Thanks a lot Don. Will do that. I'm enjoying the pa1000 more and more as I keep playing it. The sounds are richer and fuller. Not that the s970 was a slouch but after about 10 years with Yamaha this is a refreshing change.

considering buying the s1 Pro and probably buy another one to use with the pa1000 what's ur take in them. Also does 2 s1 pros improve the bass as the single struggles a bit.

Hi Sunster,
Congratulations on choosing the Korg Pa1000. Coming from over 18+ years playing Yamaha Arrangers, my sentiments match yours. On a whim, I had a chance to audition and compare a Korg Pa1000 side by side with both a Yamaha Genos and Korg Pa4X and the the Pa1000 immediately won 'for me'. In addition too it's ultra compact size & weight & incredible 'bang for the buck' price, love having built in speakers to act as personal on stage monitors, or even used alone for smallest casual gigs. I especially appreciate Korg's uncompressed sound idea for live performance venues. IMHO Yamaha is great for a more studio produced sound whereas Korg is idea for a live venue sound. Love Korg's chord sequencer used on the fly in live performance as well.

No. The Pa1000's assignable (hand controller) switches functions does not include sustain. See list of assignable switch function on page 815.

Wow. Thanks scottyee. It's been a long time. I used to be quite active on this forum and read especially your posts. It's great to be back and interact with the gurus again. So how can I have some knd of on off control for the piano sustain without using a pedal. Any ideas?

Scottyee Yes you are right but I guess I'm seeing almost the best of both worlds with the korg. Always liked Yamahas out of the box polished CD quality sound but the korg is so tweakable.moreover the Indian styles and drums on the korg which I'm sure will be very helpful in my country are much higher quality as compared to the Yamaha. To be honest the s series Yamahas were getting a bit boring and the pa1000 is a nice refreshing change. I havent even skimmed the surface on this monster yet. And yes the speakers sound wayyy better than the Yamaha which was decisive for me since the s950 and the 970 both had boxy sounding speakers.

Although it may disfigure the instrument for resale, I've seen toggle switches or push-buttons attached with velcro to the keyboard. These are wired into a 1/4" phono plug, which is then plugged into the footswitch jack. So, in other words, instead of a foot switch, you have a "hand switch." These could be momentary (like a door bell) or a sliding switch / bat toggle if you don't wish to hold it down. Whatever suits your need.

The best location would be above the joystick, but I think that's where the assignable switches are. Maybe you could put them on the front side of the keyboard facing the player, or the outside (left side.)

Arrangers are 85% software, and 15% thoughtful ergonomics!

A small flat locking foot switch will fit fine above the assignable switches. Just use regular velcro not industrial. I used to do this on my other keyboards for vocal harmony on off. works great.

Scott, I agree. On the job it’s Korg. At home it’s Yamaha. Arranger keyboards are tools. Select the tool that will give you WHAT YOU FEEL completes your needs and desires. I had both the Pa4x and the S975 side by side for four months. I sold the Pa4x, there are no more jobs on my calendar.
