Bill, in the marine industry, they have combined supertwist technology with backlit LED. Supertwist backlights the LED display during the day with reflected sunlight, while at night, special LED lights are used. This results in an incredibly brilliant display under all lighting conditions.

My statements pertaining to the display of marine devices are based upon own, personal experience with the Lowrance HDS7 GPS/Plotter that is positioned on the steering console of my boat. It frequently sits in direct sunlight and can be clearly seen from nearly any angle. This has been available in nearly all marine devices for more than 2 decades. Prior to the advent of supertwist, all marine devices were hooded so the displays could be visualized in sunlight.
