Very short 30 sec video of my cousin today. He’s using a Bose S1 on battery power. It’s above his head...the only amplification.

His piano is a Casio PX-5S I’m thinking and he uses an Aleisis drum machine. All is run through a small mixer.

He had to crank the S1 down to around 3...too loud otherwise.

The video is 720p from my Samsung Galaxy S8. I didn’t realize I could upload directly to YouTube.

Took me about two minutes to upload this clip.

Didn’t realize this was so simple.

Man, that sounded really good. After listening a couple times, the vocals were really loud and music could be much louder. I'm really thinking of going (2) of these and enjoy Bose for a change, in stereo....

What was it recorded through please???? A video camera from the back of the room it appears?

OK, crossed replies. Impressive with a camera cell phone. Sounds like there's plenty of power. I wonder how it covers mid range like my QSCs. They are the only speakers that I ever liked my piano through.

Like most things, you can read all you want...visit...watch videos....

But until you try it out in person...that’s the only way to know for sure.

I will say, after listening to my cousin today, I wondered why I bought two S1’s...

What do you mean by this? Are you not happy with your Bose S1 purchase? Confused, as usual smile

Donny, you know there is absolutely no comparison between using headphones and speakers. And, Guitpic just reinforced my argument about stereo V/S Mono. Of course, you could have a headphone set for each of your audience members, then they would surely hear stereo. wink

Forget letting the audience hear your best sound if you like. But do consider that if you have two powered speakers in place you always have a backup in case one fails.
I've had this happen only twice in the years I've used them but I was REALLY happy to have two when it did happen. It occurred once with the Bose Compacts and once with the Maui 5s.
With the Bose, the unit had to be replaced. With the Maui it was a simple loose connection where the power cord plugs in.
Being able to finish the job can mean the difference between getting paid and getting embarrassed. I prefer getting paid. smile

Amen. I don't care how much work or how small or if they're all asleep. I continue to set up everything, gig after gig. Now I'm deciding on a pair of EV powered 8s or a pair of Bose S1.

EV ZX1a? The small powered 8” speaker?

I love the idea of those but when I bought new speakers back in 2009, I listed to them vs the RCF ART 310a... the RCF won hands down at around the same price. The Bose S1Pro seems to be a unique speaker which is made in 2018. Newer tech... designed for music of today with a Bluetooth option. Good DSP and auto EQ depending on your position of the speaker. The EV was nice but not much low end 30 feet away.

Jim, I would try them both out and purchase them from a company that has a liberal return policy. I suspect, after playing for a few weeks with a pair of EV-10Ps, that you will go with the Bose S1s. For me, the EVs lacked both clarity and bottom end, but they may work for someone else.

Good luck on whatever you decide upon,

Yes, to replace the biggies (will keep for a while). Going to 15 is huge. Being able to utilize a dual pole mount is intriguing. I'm not a boomer, so not real concerned with the bass and not clip. I have a good feeling about the fidelity - exciting, can't wait. Will have Saturday - 2 gigs!

So after reading the Bose S1 posts I went to Guitar Center to but a BUT/TRY a Bose S1. Please – this is based on my needs and what I feel is quality.

Not impressed for $599.00. When Bose PA speakers first came out people thought they were the best of the best. I went to see some big bands that were using them; they were fantastic. BUT when compared to the Pas with the large bass bins – Bose was much cleaner, they cut through right to the back of the room but although you could hear the bass, you could not feel the bass. The Pas with the speakers in the poles and the large bins were much warmer. (Opinion)

Same with the home units. I own a Bose Compact because the weight balances the difference. My best set up was two powered JBL 10” on poles or on the floor, depending; and a powered sub-base when needed. (Which was not too often)

I enjoyed the video but the room in itself doubled the clarity and volume. Tomorrow the Bose S1 will go in my garage where I can boost the volume a bit; I don’t think I will keep them.
In all honesty a megaphone would do the jobs that I MIGHT be playing soon. So all this is just remembering when. (smile)

Thanks for your review John. I ordered a pair and will put through a good 20 - 30 gig test. I hope to get a good enough bass response to handle small rooms. Looking forward to hearing more smile

Donny, I had a 20 inch sub woofer that weighed under 5 pounds, but that was back in 1973. It went down to frequencies far below the human hearing range. You really don't need heavy to have those low frequency sounds. And, it was powered with just 100 watts. It was awesome.

Interesting...hadn’t seen this thread in a while. My reason for Bose S1 = weak hip = 15lbs.

Jim, I will continue to use two S1’s for coverage. My comment about the single S1 had to do with the fact that I couldn’t believe how much sound was coming out of one speaker at such a low setting.

It was also interesting that my cousin had brought his JBL Eon One which is his go to PA. The JBL was way too boomy in that room that had zero sound dampening.

To my way of thinking, there are other PA’s that sound good. I do love my JBL Eon One.

If I wanted two speakers, would I haul two JBL’s at roughly 80lbs not to mention about S1,800 for two or.. spend $1,200 and haul two at 30lbs? No contest for me..at least until I get back into weight lifting at the gym. crazy

Your example is not fair....

Stereo you will hear panning of instruments and different locations within the stereo field.. (this is the ideal sound)..

Mono will combine left and right stereo outputs together... voiding all panning and stereo imaging...(yuk)..

Your example is a stereo signal and you are removing half of the stereo field, only hearing a partial sound... I bet you sure can hear a difference..

A true mono sound you will hear these signals combined... and it will never sound as good as a true stereo..

I have one too. Mostly use it around the house now. It is heavier than most any single piece of gear I have. Besides, on the occasions when I have to move my stuff, I have PEOPLE for that! smile
It was very useful when I played a lot of hotels, clubs, casinos, where I would have to use elevators. Could make one trip.
