I've never needed more than 61 keys, even when I played piano.

That may be the primary reason I’m not ordering the Genos. Only want, or need, 61 notes. Think I’ll wait on the next PSR upgrade. Or, may spring for the new Korg Pa 1000. I really prefer built-in speakers.

Donny,
I have never had a need for 76 keys and still don't. I doubt a 61 key version would be much smaller but it would be nice. I am finding the Genos to be a beast to transport to gigs. It is not very heavy but the physical size is a real pain in the neck for loading and unloading. It would have been a real winner if Yamaha would have looked at the Korg PA4x and copied the size of it.

What do the extra keys offer someone who is not a piano player?

Greetings,

I am that typical Yamaha home player and like the fact Genos has 76 keys. I went from a Tyros 4 to a Tyros 5 with 76 keys. I immediately liked the extra real estate expanding my left hand for full chords and having extra range for right hand playing. I found that a good option for me.

I do think Yamaha should have offered Genos in a 61 key version since I read that so many players liked that. My Genos will never leave the house so its mass and weight are not an issue. I was able to fit my boxed Genos into my Hyundai to transport it home. A boxed Tyros 5 - 76 did not fit into the same car with the hatch closed.

Would a 61 key version of Genos really be that much lighter?? -charley

I never gigged with the Tyros 5, while I had it------only the S970. It was because of Deane’s assessment-----“a pain in the neck for loading and unloading.” I play in many weird locations. Size, weight, portability, and ease of transportation are big issues. Almost as important as great voices and styles.

I would not go for a 61 if 76 was available.
G-70 and SD1 has lovely keybeds, and if Genos, or PA4X-76 (to me it most likely going to be Korg) match that great keyfeel, I'm looking forward to lay hands on it.
Also 76 give more room when split. Size is OK, I don't drag keyboards around to gig anymore.

(Wersi Pegasus Wing does also have 76, but that's another story.... )

Jonny, when I was working 7 days a week, the bulk of any keyboard with 76 keys would have been brutal. For home players, they should all go to 88 or 101 fully weighted keys. smile

When Tyros only came in 61 keys everybody was asking for a 76 note version, when the T5 appeared the 76 outsold the 61, so it was logical to make the Genos a 76 as it is what most users wanted. As to weight, then the Genos is lighter than a 61 Tyros and not much bigger, so you have the best of both worlds.

There was never any reason for an arranger to be lumbered with a highly restrictive 61 notes, (It was just a throwback to the organ, but they forgot that an organ had 2 of them) particularly as a lot of them are used as pianos. (Have you ever seen a 61 note acoustic piano?)
