Morning Gents

The Maui 5 arrived, set up and tested. Difficult to say much other than I'm not disappointed. First gig next week then we'll see how it performs. I've also acquired a tiny (Behringer Xenyx 302) mixer. It sits nicely on my mic stand underneath my tablet (8") one channel for the mic and one for the backing track, works very well.

Col

Hi Donny, Here's a pic of the rig.

Notice the distinct lack of cables, whoopee.

There are three cables hiding behind the mic stand but that's it.

Col

PS: I've just sold my Pa800 and a load of other bits and pieces, wondering what to do with the cash left over after paying for the Maui 5. There's a very cheap BK-9 on eBay I'm keeping my eye on, might have a punt if it remains cheap.

LD Maui just arrived all I can say is WOW!!!
took it out of the box synced it Bluetooth with my phone and it really sounds great pushing all kinds of music thru it, and with the S970 too, crisp, clear, and amazing bass for a unit this size, lightweight, compact, and the optional quality zippered covers are spot on also,......LD systems Maui line makes a quality built Pa system product in this range for sure besides their whole line of speakers also all the way down to the tight turning knobs. If you were on the fence about buying a LD Maui 5 system just call Frank at Audioworksct & go order one or two at almost half the price of a Bose compact & sounds just as good or better with a few more features too. It certainly won't let you down. It goes on stage for tomorrows gig can't wait perfect for small jobs. keys

Thanx again Frank cool2

Does that line input on the back of the Maui 5 accept XLR only; or, does it accept a ¼ inch cable, as well? None of the videos I’ve seen mention that distinction.

Took the maui % on her maiden run today for a performance of about 75 PP and I was more then satisfied that I made the right choice. This unit really sounds good for a smaller venue with enough gusto to cover a small to medium size room for sure....bass was tight, clear mids & highs searing over the top,...my vocals were strong and so was the VH2 harmonies and I really pushed it today to make sure, no clipping or distortion,....I had the master Vol and channel vol both at 2pm. Its very easy to transport and set up also.

One thing I Noticed and didn't realize looking at the picture in my previous post that when I tried a 1/4 jack in the back of the unit thinking it was a dual input it wasn't,....It seems to be only XLR but no problem changing cables I carry both anyway.
All in All if your thinking Maui 5 for small jobs
go for it or two !!

enjoy!!

That's a good looking line array. Congratulations. A good price good sound. A winning combination. Bluetooth audio is a nice touch. I have the Maui 11, and the Maui 28. I like them both, but the column speaker of the 11 does not fold in half and it's cumbersome to carry it. Does the 5 fold in half?

ok I had some time this morning to figure out what went wrong regarding the cables & rear inputs...as I suspected it was the fault of a bad wire which I haven't used in a while and now I know why,....so I tried it again using a brand new dual 1/4" to 1/4" jacks in the rear inputs connected to the S970 and it works perfectly now as it should! clap ...
It's official now you can use both XLR or 1/4" with the Maui 5.
I'll take it out to a small Wedding Sunday see what it can do in that situation.cool2

carry on...

Donny ,

Now for the thousand dollar question I probably can guess the answer but would like to hear...........from your experience how do you compare to a Bose Compact? I realize you didn't A/B them but curious on your thoughts.

Thx

Without starting a war here, ....I'll just say the Maui 5 has reinforced my affection for a small line array system again after as you well know I wasn't a fan of the Bose Compact or my bigger L1. The M5 just sounds better all around to my ears vs the Compact at almost half the price & with more features, better design, EQ, inputs, Bluetooth also. Maui has a winner with the M5.
Mine will get alot of use is all I can say.

Glad your enjoying your new system. My only question is never using one of these small systems is the bass from a single 8" speaker. Your out there using it in the real world so I'm impressed with your reviews.
I've always got GAS so even though my JBL's are killer I'm always looking. My newest interest is the Turbosound IP1000. Same price as the MAUL but with two 8" subs. I'm thinking two of those would have a nice stereo spread. They make one with a 12" bottom too. Same 1000 watt power rating (which is probably BS) on both models.
Take a look at them over at Sweetwater.com . So far thats the only dealer selling them

Turbosound 1000 is much heavier than Bose Compact or Maui 5. It is made by Behringer.
I'll bet it sounds great though.

The Turbosound IP500 is the equivalent of the Maui5 the Maui11 is
more similar to the IP1000.

I did not know that Turbo Sound is made by Behringer, but it is OK as long as it sounds good as you say. I am not "brand-washed." I got this info from Sweetwater.
iP12B - 49.2 lbs
iP15B - 58.0 lbs
iP500 - (not measured yet yet) @ 180-degree horizontal
iP1000 - 54.7 lbs @ 180-degree horizontal
iP2000 - 67.7 lbs @ 180-degree horizontal

Behringer has improved since they first hit the market. In the past Sweetwater wouldn't sell their stuff and now their one of the biggest dealers.
I'm guessing the weight of the Turbo systems is mostly in the wood sub/amp boxes which could be a good thing. Quality subs and bass amps are all made of wood because its more rigid so your low tones don't compromise the cabinet.
Hope theres some more reviews of the Turbosound line.

A good point about the subs/bass amps made of wood. Since the detachable colume speakers come in two or more pieces(I think), each component would not be heavy. I think the subwoofer of my Maui 28 is all made of wood. A bit heavy, but very good sounds.

I have spoken with Frank about getting a pair of the Maui 5's. I don't think they will sound much different from then Bose Compacts, but there are a few additional controls.

After looking at the spec's Don, I don't think they will sound nearly as good, but I really don't know - specs never tell the whole story. Of course, at this stage of the game, with just two jobs left until full retirement, it really doesn't make any difference to me, or my audiences.

Good luck,

Gary cool

Frank told me that there wasn't much difference, maybe a little more bass response. I've found more than adequate bass response on Bose Compact though.

I think the 2 biggest factors with the Maui 5s compared to the compacts, are

1) price, $300 less, but if you already have the compacts then stay with them

2) the ability to tailor the sound a bit, you have a Hi-Freq control and a sub control, must people use a mixer or have that ability on their keyboards, but its always a good thing to have just in case

3) Bluetooth, now that can mean allot to some people and nothing to others, but it is a feature that is not found on the compact and also is coming in allot of other systems

4) your buying something from me smile

3) Bluetooth, now that can mean allot to some people and nothing to others, but it is a feature that is not found on the compact and also is coming in allot of other systems

4) your buying something from me smile

All great points Frank....
just to add the Bluetooth feature works flawlessly on M5,... I can see using it out on a deck for let's say a cocktail hr wedding etc,....with the Maui 5 & just your smart phone music wireless, while your main sound setup PA remains on stage inside the venue ready to go when the affair starts,..also the Maui 5 covers are heavy duty, easy to remove & put on, zippered and well designed pockets inside for the poles, & accessories, for the system too. cool2

Ok reporting back..after 18 small jobs using the Maui 5 its definitely a keeper,...lightweight, great crystal clean sound and the top end clearly cuts thru the mix with vocals, trumpets, etc, without the hint of distortion & nice tight bass. Now I can highly recommend the LD Maui 5 for all your small jobs,...and if using two units for about 100-125pp would sound amazing also. Then add the extra features Bluetooth, EQ, and you have a winner for sure!
give Frank a call at audioworks.com

a Happy Maui5 player.

I play alot of different size rooms with very different acoustics some better then others,.....some have always been difficult because of many factors mirrored ceilings, no rugs, 2 story high vaulted peaked cavernous ceilings, L Shaped rooms, low ceilings, etc, etc,....yesterday was one of those days where I was in the 2 story high vaulted one using the Maui 5 and let me tell you I was amazed of how the sound covered the room with no Speaker EQ all at at all except my usual S970 onboard KB/Mic EQ.....vs my Previous powered PA speakers...
Lovin these Maui 5's more and more.. keys
