Hi Fred,

Good news - you seem to be well protected now. Another thought about transferring data between your Laptop and Desktop PC - you say you are using a CD to do this. There is a quicker and better process (short of networking your two computers)
You can use a 'Flash Memory' device which plugs into your USB ports. These devices are known by several names - Thumb Drives, USB Flash Drive, Key Drive etc. and to your computers, they just look like an additional Disk Drive. Since your operating system is Windows XP, you do not need any further software or drivers to use these devices.
They are quite inexpensive and are currently available with capacities ranging from 128Mbyte to 4 Gbyte and are a really good investment for transferring data and temporary storage. You will find a selection of these devices here :
http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/default.php?cat=6&type=6070&man=0&filterwords=&go=SEARCH&comp=

This firm is in the Channel Islands and any item which costs less than £18 is VAT Free.
Currently, a 1 Gbyte device is being offered for £15.49 plus postage, which is a great price.

Just one more comment about USB memory devices - I now use one of these for my backups. I used to burn backups to CD - which admittedly means you can keep backups for ages if you want to - but for my purposes I just back up to the same USB memory drive all the time.

Hi Bill,
The ‘Flash Memory’ device sounds good. My Lap Top is
Windows xp, but my main computer is Windows 98, it has USB ports, would it work between the two of them? I would be interested to know if it would work.

I have not bought any thing over the internet yet and feel apprehensive to do so, but I will have to one day.

Thanks for the information Bill.
Fred Wren

P.S. “Short of networking your two computers”
Bill, I have to make a note of how to switch them on !!!

Hi Fred,
When you say that your PC operating system is Windows 98, is it just '98' or '98SE'?

Since you have USB ports on your main PC, you may already have the necessary drivers installed. It would be a case of obtaining a usb device and 'suck-it-and-see'
If you decide to take the USB Transfer route, but don't seem to have the necessary drivers, I can email them to you.

Hi Bill,
I went to the 7 day shop .com link for a look,
And it seems those ‘Flash Key Drives’ are
not for use with windows 98\SE. but I shall
keep looking. They are great prices.
Thanks again for your help.

Hi Fred,
I would think that the only reason it is stated that they are "not for Windows 98" is that they are not directly usable without an additional driver. I had no problems using these devices when I had Win98SE on one of my PCs.

I have found another source of supply - they are a little more expensive than those in the above link, however, the prices stated include VAT and postage. You can also order on the phone if you are worried about ordering on the Internet.

Windows 98 Drivers, specific to the 'Buffalo' range can be downloaded from the 'Buffalo' website. I already have copies of these drivers, which I can email to you.

Hi Bill,
You are a wealth of information.
I phoned them up to day 4th may,
and ordered a Buffalo USB 256mb £12-99.

I don’t know if it will arrive before I go
on holiday 9Th may, although he said it will be sent
off today.
Thanks for your help Bill.
All the best,
Fred Wren
