Not even close.

I think pop music is a continuum, with highlights all along the way. Think of Marvin Gaye, Sly and the Family Stone, Blood,
Sweat and Tears...Tower of Power...Chicago...Snarly Puppy. The list goes on...and on, with each making a landmark contribution to the art form, followed by improvements/advances by those who learned from the previous standard bearer. there's a kid...about 19 here in Lexington who can outplay George Benson in the Benson style. Guess what? He acknowledges his roots and gives proper respect to Benson; as well he should.

The Beachboys, maybe. Frankie and crew....not do much for me, but they do deserve recognition for their contribution to a small but memorable portion of the field.

And don't cut the current crop of creative kids and other innovators short. They're hard at work creating great music and advancing the pop music art form as we sit here.

As the plate on the front of my car says.....MUSIC MATTERS!

For me it's the BIG BAND ERA no doubt.....live music at it's very best!

I only wish I was born earlier to see them play like my parents did in the 30's & 40's.

What is best is all a matter of perception.for most people it could be what was popular through their teen years. For me it is mixed on the one hand my greatest interest was always big band 1945 through the 50's with a great influence also from the 30's and enjoyed very much so still today. But if I was pushed for an opinion I would edge and say I think the greatest decade would be 1965 to 1975. I also think that as one gets older you still hark back to the days when you listened to music all day and combed your hair every couple of minutes. We all have many great memories and I think that is what makes music not only unique but personal.

There were too many great eras of music to pick just one. That aint fair. Over the years I have heard many of my favorite artists play live and I couldn't pick any one of them. I have seen Benny Goodman , Stephane Grappelli, B.B.King, Frank Zappa, Jeff Beck, Return To Forever, George Benson and so many more brilliant artists play live. Such a wide variety of musical styles from so many eras and I love them all.

Of course Nigel and Johnnie.c are correct. By the time you comb through age and cultural filters, you would NEVER get a consensus. Plus, there are other factors. I love the era that produced 'Bird', Miles, Monk, Dizzy, etc., but many of the tunes that propelled them to greatness (now called 'standards') were written a decade or two earlier. I think Johnnie.c put it best; "We all have many great memories and I think that is what makes music not only unique but persona". I agree 100% (although the Bebop era WAS the best ).
