... I'm diving in the deep end here, but Gary's version gave me the incentive to try this tune ...
Both versions were recorded on the Pa900 using on board styles which I edited and added multi pads to ...

the harmony for the first version (PA ex) was provided by my Digitech Vocal Workstation EX ...

https://app.box.com/s/u5cxc728wtgi38yf2mzaex4g7g7amegv

the second (PA pa) uses a harmony setup I put together on the PA900, and the style is actually the one 'suggested' by KORG in the on-board songbook ...

Good job Tony,

I can hear the higher voice on the 900 harmony now. Are these recordings off the keyboard or did you use your Zoom Recorder.

God Bless,
Don

Good job Tony. Can't say which harmonizer I like better. Both are good, just differ slightly.

Glad to be an inspiration to one of my older colleagues. wink I agree with Don about the harmonies, just different, but the quality is pretty much equal.

Nice job on these, Tony...I can't pick which one I like better.

It's nice when a player puts his own stamp on a tune, which you have done with both of these, and, of course, we have the perfect instrument for that very job.

Yes, but the finished recording comes up as "Take 1" ... you have to be sure to Name It and Save It to the USB ...

You actually have an option to record on the Pa900 Hard Disc, or the USB ...

with this kind of 3/4 part full harmony the slower original tempo adds to it's beauty imo..and gives it a chance to breathe.

Tony, I'll be 75 October 17th. If I recall, you have me beat by a couple months, but I'm not sure.

Nice job, Tony. I liked the harmonizing on the Pa900. Would you kindly share your settings?

Nice Tony.
I like your voice. I don't like the harmonies from either unit. Are you using chordal or scale mode on each unit??

mirza ... Thank you for the compliment and the critique ... both are appreciated ...
I am using the 'Chordal' mode ...
As I am always interested in learning, I would appreciate knowing what it is you dislike about the harmonies and any suggestions you might have for improvement ...

Tony, no critique here. You did great job. I like making my own harmonies, and was never a fan of chordal mode. Why?? Because it's too unpredictable .It chooses it's own harmonies according to chord changes, but that in lots of ways doesn't work. Sometimes it's ok , but mostly not.You can really hear artifacts when voices change. I prefer scale mode always. Especially when I can create my custom scales. It works much better in scale mode. Try it with your digitech. I am not sure if pa900 has user scales. I know I made them on my pa800 while I had it.
Scale mode is more work and more setting up while playing live but you get much better results with harmonies.

Mirza,

I used my Digitech Vocalist 4 set to key to do this. In the music IQ setting the machine reads your voice so no chords are involved.

I think Digitech makes great harmony and would love to see Yamaha link with them the way Korg has linked with TC Helicon.

The way you describe setting up harmony could work for the studio, but I'll take my Digitech for live performance. I have this EAGLETS 3 style set up in all the keys I like to sing in so it's just a matter of stepping through to the right key and starting the song. Of course I use other settings like 3UP and ALT GOSPEL HARMONY. They all produce great results for my music.

Give this a listen and let me know how you critique the harmonies.

God Bless,
Don

Don, you are using scale mode. That is why it sounds good in this song. It doesn't matter if it's a major, minor or custom scale. It's still scale mode as you described it.You said you set up the key you play in. The key with harmony units, Digitech ot TC-Helicon is not to over use them. Me personally don't like to use more than 2 harmony voices at once.Actually, I will usually only use one voice for harmony. Or pan harmonies left and right.

Harmonies in this song sound nice and I wouldn't change anything.

Thank you my fellow Canadian friend. (I live in Brampton.) I made a cool discovery last week while preparing for a concert. I don't sing very often in the key of C#m but I do "Mary Did You Know" and one of my original songs in that key. I had allocated a spot for the harmony in C#m which was always a pain to get to in the step up/step down process. Was doing a song in D and wanted to do "Mary" next and thought. "I think this might work if I just step up to E". Lo and behold, to my delight, it worked. Harmonies sounded the same as in C#m. That is absolutely great as the unit is a floor unit and stooping down to engage minor scale is less than convenient.

As a long time singer I am well aware of using harmonies tastefully. I can't believe some people just turn it on and sing with it start to finish. Nothing could be more tacky and boring. Not sure I agree on limiting the voices though as the strength of the Vocalist 4 is Beatles, Eagles and Gospel choir harmonies. I use 3 Up with only the one voice to add Phil Everly to his brother Don. This gives a great Everly Brothers sound.

Thanks for listening!
God Bless,
Don

I know, that's why I thought it would work. So now that helps simplify things for me. If I want to sing in Bm, I can select D. In Am select C etc.
Blessings,
Don

I bet the 'cloth ears' who wrote that garbage would love to have even 1% of the royalties from that song. Any 'no talent' can knock success, but there's no denying it.
