Donny, I don't think it's a matter of changing the technology back to where it was 35 years ago, but I do believe that some folks have their priorities in the wrong place. When is texting while driving anything less than insane? Though it's now against the law to do so in many states, there isn't a day that goes by that I don't see some fool looking down and texting on their phone/pad that is sitting on the car's console, thinking no one can see it, so they won't know they're texting. At the same time, there is a young child in a car safety seat in the back of the car. They're driving 65 MPH down I-95, texting, on the nation's busiest highway and only occasionally glancing at the road.

It's also illegal to talk on a cellular phone that is not totally hands free in many states now. There's a very good reason for that and recently a commercial on TV was released that puts that in perspective.

Since when is it more important to text/talk than to communicate and interact directly with your children? In this instance, I have some family members that thought their TV could raise their children. It's almost as if the day those kids were born, they were placed in front of a TV set, something like an electronic baby sitter. Then, as the kids grew older, when they got bored with the TV, they gave them money and told them to go out and do something else. They did, they took the money and purchased drugs. Well, you can only guess where that led to!

Now, one of their daughters has a toddler. The toddler runs around the house, breaking things, screaming it's head off for attention, while both parents, and the grandparents, have their attention firmly fixed to their dumb-phones. The child, who just turned three, has no discipline, no parental control, and no future. I don't want to see my grandson go in that same direction, Donny - that's why I'm intervening as much as possible. I'm hoping that I-pad will not dominate his life and he will experience the world first hand, a world outside a telephone company's hand-held, electronic, entertainment device.

You CAN make a difference,

Gary cool

Gary texting while driving really?....is that any worse then everyone using their big screen GPS.....
or fancy DVD, Hightech Touch screen car radios.....bending over to search for songs, put in CD's, Mp3 thumb drives, talking on the phone,....all while driving at insane speeds over the limit...and some drunk to boot too?
Its a crap shoot out there DRIVER beware and DRIVER be in DEFENSIVE mode at All times....
let me ask you this also.....why is it that in the USA the highest speed limit is approx 65-80 but cars can do well over 120MPH? Why do they need that much speed.? beacuse they know people will speed and that =MONEY $$$$ in tickets same as all the other laws they make up when they very well know most people will not abide, cell phone , text, seat belts or whatever ....it's all about making $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ for cities....btw by personal experience Maryland is one of the worst..... I remember years ago when I was staioned in MD in the service 1969 the cops made up their own Fines cost on the spot!!! surprised

Donny, I worked for the Maryland State Police in 1961 - we didn't make up fines on the spot! That's BS.

Now, lets get to the cars. Are you trying to tell me that texting while driving is SAFE? And, I don't know about your GPS, but mine, after in input the destination, provides vocal instructions - I never look at it or touch the screen. In fact, you cannot do anything with the screen when the car is moving and the device is activated in the safety mode.

I don't change radio stations, I don't mess with CDs, and I don't even own a texting device other than my desktop PC. So, I guess I don't fit into any of those insane categories of doing things while driving other than driving. Hey, this isn't rocket science - it's common sense.

Now, those red light cameras, at least those where in the vicinity of where I live, cut down red light running accidents by 90 percent. Hey, there were a lot of folks prior to the cameras that figured red lights and stop signs were just suggestions and that they didn't have to do those things if no one were looking. Sure, the city makes a few bucks on it, so does the camera company, but you know what if that red light camera stops some ahole from running a red light and killing one of my family members in the process, it's well with the expense and aggravation it causes to the ahole who does these things.

And, now, from the world of technology, if you think you can get away with texting and talking with a non-hands-free mobile device, think again. The cop doesn't have to stop you - he can just fire up his dash cam, shoot the photo of you using the device in your moving car, record the license number, speed, time of day, day, month, all in high-resolution digital photography, and mail you the $120 citation. Lots of luck on trying to get away with that one, even if you take it to court. smile

Think about what you wrote above, Donny. Just because these things are available, doesn't make them smart, or give you, or anyone, the right to use them in an unsafe manner. It's no different that driving your car at unsafe speeds above the speed limit because the car has that ability. Unfortunately, it's not always the drive, or user of the device, that is adversely affected. A lot of innocent people are often killed as a result of this. Don't think so - maybe you should watch the video again.

Donny, maybe some local town sheriff got away with that kind of crap, but a state trooper would have ended up in jail himself.

Gary I don't think I said it was State Troopers,.....but actually exiting the Fort on our last day stationed there we were caught in a 3 car setup very hidden radar speed trap must have been 20 cars pulled over........local units I would say don't remember the actual town some where near Aberdeen?,...says we were speeding don't recall how fast,.....then asked me where we were going I said
Brooklyn, NY about 3 hrs north, .....asked us how much money we had at that time I think around $40.00 between us....then he went into his car figured out the gas and tolls to NY and gave us a $16.00 ticket and said that would leave us enough for gas, tolls, etc.. only because he was a veteran who was stationed there also,....
said follow me to the judges house somewhere in the woods and we did about 10 min away, ....went into some guys furnished basement almost like yours, .....he came downstairs in a black robe, sat at his desk, read us the charges, ......the cop said just plead guilty and it's over with,.. so we pleaded guilty, paid the $16.00 fine, and were allowed to leave town I was only 17 yrs old....... frown

Gary think again.......these car manufactures install all these options in today's cars.....like in dash touchscreen GPS, and all the tech savvy crap that goes with a visual command center in your dash board....you think they worry about what the consequences are they know people will be fooling around with all this stuff, pushing buttons on all this gadgetry while they are driving!....
not to mention all the girls I see every morning putting on eye makeup while driving and fixing their hair etc,.....people are people and will do everything they aren't supposed to do that's the point...they know that and love writing tickets....every year it increases....it's a freaking Zoo out there.
And that's without the drunks......your gonna tell me that people in every bar in the world just have one drink? then drive home? give me a break the average bar patron drinks 3 or more drinks of whatever and more..if they wanted to they could park out side any bar and arrest 95% of customers for DUI.....all over the legal limit.......designated driver my A$$ !! Also did you hear POT is legal in some states also, Great combined with a few shots of Jack Daniels depth charges in a glass of Guinness and Bonzai & Whooooopppppiiiieeeeee! dance2 ??
There's only so many officers out there against millions of wrong doers....sadly it's only gonna get worse..

Keep your eyes open and WORRY what the OTHER Guy is doing while driving I say!
