My wife and I have both been up and down with our weight, and wanted a different approach. We visited Rick Warren's (Purpose Driven Life) church in Los Angeles last October, and grew in our admiration of him. When we saw recently that he had sponsored a new approach to losing weight and keeping it off, we were keen to try it, and have found it very successful so far. We are half way to our goal after 2 months, and have learned some skills and have a different perspective on why we should keep it off. http://www.danielplan.com/

Yes, rosetree, he recently lost his son to suicide and I think the last time he was talking about that. He has so much integrity that what he says needs to be listened to, IMHO.

Tony, you may already know this, so forgive me if you do, but if you ever feel you want a goal, a good way to set it would be to get your Body Mass Index (BMI) below 25. There are various calculators on the web, such as this https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/guidelines/obesity/BMI/bmicalc.htm

a 50 lb loss will make a world of difference to your health and well being, Bp, etc, first lose it, them in moderation you can always have pasta again.. Donny ... no argument there ... I've just had a physical and fortunately all the numbers (except for the scale ) are very good ... I've NEVER had a problem in the sightest with BP, heart rate is EXCELLENT - still reaping the benefits of all those years running 60 - 70 miles a week in the mid 70s to early 80s - blood flow very good, cholesterol is under control but the bad cholesterol is too high due to overweight and not enough exercise, which I am addressing ... I take a cholesterol pill and a pill to help prevent the esophageal spasms, and that's it ... So, as I said, I will keep at it, and see where it goes ... Just wish the damn snow would stop so I can walk the golf course !!!

Don, with all the hoopla going on, I neglected to express my concern about your recent health issues. I hope they are fleeting and that you are able to get right back to telling me how much I hate arrangers . Seriously though, I think the advice to 'drop the pounds' is probably good advice, something that most of us need to do. My wife eats like a health nut and exercises vigorously every day. You know the old saying, "there's nothing more annoying than 'a good example'. It's pretty obvious to me that she's trying to outlive me. Luckily, 'only the good die young' . I should be around for quite awhile....you too. I was just thinking the other day how much we have in common; we're both tall, overweight, very intelligent, good sense of humor, and part Native American. I think where we diverge is the part of us this is NOT Native American . Oh well, at least you used to play an organ . Get well soon. chas

I walked one mile the first day, two miles the second, three miles the third...I ended up so far from home, I had to take a bus to get back. Seriously again, I agree with Graham wholeheartedly. When I took Martial Arts, the way we were taught to keep our weight nearest the ideal, was to "eat little and often" rather than a few big meals, and, if this was a bit inconvenient, then have the bigger meal(s) earlier in the day, either for breakfast or lunch. No between meal snacks other than some fruit. And, as Graham said above, try to not eat late at night...for me, it was after 6:00 PM or so. If I was really hungry late at night, I'd have a small bowl of cereal or rice or some fruit. I just bought two new pairs of jeans Wednesday, and was able to get the same size I wore over 10 years ago...36 X 32, so it does work. Good luck Don, I know you can do it...we need around here, buddy, so look after yourself, please. Ian
