I'm using Win7 and have had no issues since the beginning, Tony, and that's going back to when I got this PC several years ago.

Would a power drop cause it to shut down? I'm not at all PC literate so this is a wild stab in the dark...maybe a lot of power drain due to Christmas lights?

Did your email go down as well?

Ian

Could it be a loose connection? Did you move anything recently, or hook up anything new?

Did it start after you started doing recordings lately?

Ian, I actually thought of that, as this time it happened when I went to 'submit' Lady Wants To Know to S-Z ... I am not certain when it occurred the first time ...

Tony, Carol's laptop does the exact same thing. Happens at least once a day. I have Windows 7 in my desktop PC and no problems. There is a repair feature in the program that allows you to essentially reinstall windows 7 without destroying all your files. I've never used it, though, but it may solve the problem.

Tony I had it happen. I move the laptop from my lap to my coffee table 20 - 50 times a day and the power adapter works it's way loose from the laptop with all of the moving I suppose. Maybe you need a new outlet if it is old or maybe you need a new jack in the laptop if you've plugged and unplugged it many time over a period of time.
Just a thought.

No problems at all with Win 7. It is very fast, and has lots of nice features. XP will not be supported much longer, and after using 7, when I go back to the laptop with XP, it seems clunky!

Mine starting doing that and it turned out to be the HDMI cable.

That is the second HDMI cable to go bad for me - one on the TV and one on my Win 7 PC.

I have seen on the net that the HDMI cables frequently go bad.

My wife's is wireless, so cable is not the problem.

Tony, with all the heavy power usage around this time of the year, you may have had a momentary brownout that you didn't notice. That COULD cause it to reboot. Just a thought.

It was probably a momentary power outage which will cause a computer to re-start.

NOTE: if it went off and came back on after a short time as it was (Did not re-start or shut down) then it is probably a hardware problem, which will take more diagnostic investigation to identify, however giving all the fans and grilles a good clean will probably help. (Most case fans have filters which can get blocked)

Hope this helps

Bill

Thanks for all the suggestions guys ... perhaps it was a power supply thing ... it TOTALLY shut down and then came back up without restoring the screens I had up at the time ... I will keep tabs if it happens again ...

I have my home computers always on a UPS power back up. Not only does it have battery back up it also filters my AC power before it gets to the computers. My power is very "dirty". The UPS beeps often indicating power glitches and sometimes I see drops under 100 volts. Thank you Florida Power and Light!! (Better known as Florida Phlash and FLicker!!!!!!!! ) -charley

Too many Tyros 5 keyboards are being turned on which is dropping power to your area. I believe this will be happening all over the USA. Lloyd darthvader

Thank you for living in the most lightning prone area in the country... (I live there too!)

Can't blame the power station for events further down the line!

I have three different UPS's in my home, one for the music rig, one for the computer rig, one for the TV and cable rig.

If I were you I would take the covers off and clean out all the dust.
Vacuum first, then use the compressed air sold for cleaning electronics.
It may be overheating??

Hello Tony,

If your Windows 7 computer is set to only update Windows every month you might (like me) have fallen foul of the last Windows Update fiasco. The update KB2887069 has a problem and has resulted in many folk having restart problems. After installing this update the computer will continue to say updating or continually restart. It can delete sound drivers and in my case with a Lenovo corrupted my logon. The advice for those affected was to start in safe mode and disable automatic Windows updates then uncheck this KB2887069 update. If you (can)Google KB2887069 you can read all about it.

Your case might differ but I posted this just in case in helps you or others.

Have a Happy Christmas

Ian
