I have an Asus i7 running Win7 as the PC. Software includes Notation Composer as my main app for reading generated lead sheets as the SMF is played. My recognition question is moot as the USB interface is recognized by Composer.

My connection is simply Midisport to Yamaha midiin, and USB to PC. There is no problem with playing through the S910 engine except no separate volume control and some wrong sounding instruments. I will try my Audya and KN7000.

The benefit and disadvantage is that you are tied to whatever board you are using. I do have Bandstand,Halionsonic, and Kontakt 4,installed, along with MidiLoop and another wrapper(host).

These are over my head as far as getting them in the wrapper, and using multitimbally.

I guess I am always looking to make my sounds more authentic, but haven't learned enough mechanics.

Its good having all these VST available, however you are trying to run before you can walk, (Effectively you are trying to learn Yamaha, Korg, Roland, Ketron, Technics etc. all at the same time) so start off with just 1 VST and get used to its operation before moving on to others. (Bandstand is probably the easiest as it is a standard balanced GM sound set, (And can be treated as such) but of a much higher quality than you get in most arrangers)

Once you get into it you will find that your gear lust for new sounds will disappear, and while you will probably want to buy more VST, they work out at a fraction of the price of a new board.

The S910 will play all the GM, XG, GM2 and even the Roland voices along with it's own voices without any special changes or instructions being sent to the keyboard. This has been true for all of the Yamaha arrangers for at least as far back as the PSR-2000.

And - with your keyboard being connected via USB, you do not even need a MIDI connection because the keyboard can do it via the USB now - both for MIDI IN and OUT - BTW, you can also connect directly via that same USB cable to an iPad for MIDI.

Yamaha has come a very long way with the USB capabilities and the newer keyboards. The MOX even has in addition to the MIDI 2way, but two stereo channels via that same USB cable. This is awesome stuff.

Very interesting Bill. I will try it with USB alone. What about the midi settings. Do you use the "Song" template ?

I have ipad 4 with iRig and the Audio and Midi Charge Dock, but haven't gotten around to using it yet.

If you have the iPad photo adapter which allows you to plug a USB cable into the iPad, that is all you need for connecting your keyboard to the iPad.

You can do the same thing with your PC or Mac, but you do need to install the Yamaha USB drivers for those machines. It is not really hard to do - you just download them from the Yamaha keyboard site, unzip the files, read the instructions and do the step by step install.

Now your keyboard does not send Audio via USB, but it does handle MIDI in both directions. I just go to "Settings" on each of the iPad apps I have and select my keyboard for MIDI there or select the channels - they are all similar.

If you have a specific App you want to use. name it and I will first try it on my setup for you.

might not help but haven't Yamaha just released a digital music app for iPad?

On the PC use Yamaha's usb driver, connect to the keyboard by usb, you should find you have 2 more midi output devices. I don't even touch my 3k midi settings. if you are using windows media player you may have to mess with audio output settings, using a sequencer progran look for midi settings

Interesting thought John. I will check it out. It seemed like I read about this with the Tyros, but may be PSR series also.
