No John - not a march at all but some of the best sixties music was written to a 6/8 beat and today that beat is used in many current pop numbers but it is a perfectly even six beats to the bar rather like the opening sequence of Emeli Sande's song - Next to me.

HI ROG, not sure if it is what you seek, but I have used Polka 2/4 in the march category sometimes for a particular 6/8 beat.
My beat gave out before the sixties!!!!!!
See Ya !!

Hi Roger
Just wondered if you had tried the rhythm Bill Norrie has for I Can't Help Falling in Love, song 10 on Songs 4 U Volume 11, 50s and 60s. We used this when Ross needed a 6/8 rhythm for one of his music exams, but agree that they are really hard to find.
Happy playing.

Any other ideas everybody?

This is a perfect post for stating how important it is for many of you to learn how to compose your own styles in COMPOSER. With the KN7000, you have the world at your fingertips. In all fairness, I can understand that this would not be an easy attempt by many if you don't have the natural ability to arrange. I have been more or less arranging since I was sixteen and writing songs at that age. I started by doing full piano scores of my songs. It was not only fun to look at my finished compositions but for someone else to play them other than myself. What a joy at the time to hear my songs played on the piano by someone else.

Years ago, when I discovered the Technics keyboards, it opened up my ability to really use this technology. Roger, for me this would be an easy style to create. Unfortunately, at this time, I don't even have time for finishing a lot of my own music because of other commitments. Do you have access to all the past styles in the Technics keyboards? Alec made them available and probably Bill has them on his website to download. Anyway, there is a good one that was on one of the earlier keyboards that should work for you. By the way, I think some of the best styles were in the KN1000. I remember bringing this style up because I have all these styles. Where it is, is a good question but you might want to do a little research by going through all the fifties and sixties styles. Personally, I never use preset styles in the keyboard. However, I do at times bring them up for inspiration of making big changes that make my own style. Speaking of, this is a good way for many of you to get acquainted with the COMPOSER section. Bring a preset style into it and start by making a few changes. You will be surprised by eventually being inspired and confident enough by creating your own styles.

Good luck Rog in finding the style you are looking for.

Hello Roger,

A few years ago I listed all the Professional and other floppies I owned. I know this list is on one of my backup CDs, so will check to see what I have. I am sure there must be some 6/8 beats on at least one out of over 100 floppies. I'll let you know if I find any.

Many thanks Audrey - I was listening to a Korg PA3X today and heard exactly the rhythm I'm looking for - it is called on the Korg PA3X '60s slow rock' - can anyone help with this rhythm/style file?

Roger, there is a 60's Slow Rock in the Gigastyle collection that sounds like what you are talking about. It is 6/8 time, but the version that I have is for my Roland keyboards and it won't work with the KN's. If someone has the Gigastyle collection for Technics it would be there. Or, if someone can convert the version I have to Technics format I can make it available to them in Roland format.

OK it's on the way. There are several in 6/8 time. If this one converts to Technics OK, I'll send others if you wish.

Hi Roger,

If you go to www.psrtutorial.com website, you can get free converted Korg PA3X styles which can be played on the Technics and other keyboards including the Yamaha Tyros keyboards (one of which I think you have).

Just click on the 'STYLES' on their homepage, the rest is self explanatory. It's a great site and the members are so helpful and friendly.

Good luck!

Glad you're sorted Roger.

I'm thinking of changing from Yamaha T4 and/or PSR950 in favour of the new 76 note Roland BK-9 but I'd like to try it first. Breve Music in Peterborough hare planning a Roland demonstration at 7.30pm on June 26 but unfortunately, I'm on holiday. Do you know anything about this keyboard? If so, I'd be grateful for your thoughts on it.

If you're a Technics fan then you really need to look at the Korg PA3X - it is the same sort of O/S and pretty intuitive. If I were to move on from my KN7000 that's the only one I'd choose.
No idea what the Rolands do or don't do and how they do it.

That’s interesting, as most users say the Korg is the most difficult and unintuitive to use, with those coming from a lot of the other top manufactures having problems getting to grips with the complexity of the Korg system. (Other top manufactures instruments are apparently much easier to get to grips with (Strange really as most of the aforementioned users found the Technics to be one of the easiest OS around)

A lot depends on your music background. If you are basically a pianist, you will like the BK-9. I have a BK-5. Roland tends to be skimpy with displays and buttons. Lots of stuff is deep in menus. Play the BK-9 before you order, Audrey. The two little displays would be much better as a larger color display. Lots of good voicing and styles but they are hard to access. I have an organ background and do not do well with the BK series. I prefer the little combo organ (AT-350C) that gives me more presets to work with. I use the BK-5 primarily for style editing for styles that I use with the AT-350C. But, again, I am not a pianist. I have an organ background.

If you like the challenge of a complex operating system, the PA3X will certainly give you that challenge. EVERYTHING is editable. But editing takes a lot of study and is not as intuitive as the Technics stuff. It took me about nine months to feel that I had a good understanding of the Korg PA3X. After that time I decided it was not the right keyboard for me. I got rid of it.

Tell you what Bill - I found the Tyros the hardest O/S to navigate by far...but I guess it's a question of what you're used to and grew up with so to speak.

I listened to the demo of the PA3X and as Queen Victoria said, "We are not amused." I found the sounds muffled and styles the guy played boring. I blame the bad mix more than the instrument. I didn't see Part 2 of the video and perhaps it is better. Drums sounded boxy and muffled.

Roger, have you tried adding a triplet sound with a guitar arpeggio or a piano playing triplets? Or the drums; not to effective.

You can add the triplets in one of the Accomp. tracks or in one of the pads. Try writing it in step time; kinda easy.

I went through all the 6/8 rhythms in my Kn7 and the Pa800 - very basic ----- just adding triplets should do the job. Adding triplets to the intros and ending might be a different job.

Roger I listened to the song, “I’d rather go blind” on YouTube – it is so simple – the triplets are played very softly in the background. By adding triplets to a rock ballad that fits the song best should do what you are looking for.

Take care, John C.

Thanks for your comments Roger. I was at the last OKC meet at Pontins 2 years ago and spent most of the time at the Korg stand. You're right, it is the nearest keyboard to the KN7000 and I was very interested in all that it had to offer, particularly when I was told it can read Technics styles as I still have quite a few of them loaded with songs and styles. However, if I did go down that road, I would want the 76-note model which back then was selling for around £4,000.

I understand the Roland BK-9 76-note model is just under £2,000 BUT it doesn't have a speaker system, so I guess I would have to pay for some sort of sound box if I wanted to take it out. At home I could just link it to my hi-fi system which is what I'm using anyway.

I think I'll wait until I've seen and played the BK-9 first before making up my mind. I'll keep you posted on that one.

By the way, my grandson uses 'Linkedin' to contact me and I notice that your name is at the bottom of the page - what's that all about?

Audrey

Hi RogerM

You can only become a LinkedIn member if you actually join, if you receive emails and you haven’t joined then delete them as they will either be spam or phishing emails.

I am a technics fan and have owned various models since they came out. I still have the KN7000. I researched and thought the Korg Pa3x was the closest to the Kn. However if you do any sequencing you will be disappointed. The Technics , in my opinion, was years ahead of its time. There are many things that can be done on the KN that cannot be accomplished on the Korg. RC Roger Bellotti
